Transfer counties

I recently moved from Suffolk county to ulster county and had my info transferred.
Ulster county contacted me and informed me that I need to go through the application process again and it could take 9 months. Why would I have to do this again?? It already took me 3 years to get my permit in Suffolk. Help. What am I doing wrong?

When I transferred my NYC permit to Columbia County I had to go thru the process again but they gave me a temp Columbia County permit that expired when my NYC would have, which was almost a year later. I was cc'd a letter the judge sent to the sheriff advising him that he had one week to complete any investigation they did. I had my permanent in about 2 mos. Did Ulster issue a temp? Or are you still riding the Suffolk permit?

I believe you go to Ulster. What happens is Suffolk sends your entire file to Ulster, so even tho I'm sure they keep a copy somewhere its no longer an active file in Suffolk. On Ulsters end its pretty much a rubber stamp unless something negative comes up in the investigation. Does Suffolk permit have an expiration date? My NYC permit had an expiration and the temp was good until then. They got mine in about 8 weeks even tho they told me it could take 6 mos. If yours has no expiration date, then it doesnt matter if it takes the 9 mos they estimated, you have a legit permit , you shouldnt have to deal with the sheriff again unless he has questions for you. If you want to buy or dispose of a handgun you just go thru the county clerks office and deal with the licence clerk.
