Transport a Handgun Through LaGuardia to FL

I had a search on here, but couldn't see a specific on this question

On Thursday, I am heading to Sarasota, FL from LaGuardia

I have a CCW for FL and a permit for NYS (NOT a NYC permit - not rich enough to pay for that!)

I have had a look on the LaGuardia website and this is what I can find

"State gun laws vary considerably. Before possessing and carrying firearms into New York please be aware of local New York City gun control laws. Please check with New York City Police prior to possessing and carrying a weapon into New York City".

But that is all I can find on their website

I think that means that I cannot transport it via LaGuardia as that is in the City and my permit does not allow me to carry in the City, which the airport is part of?

Now if I was flying from Westchester, it would not be an issue, assuming I follow the correct procedures - check the gun in, lockbox, unloaded, double lock, etc, etc

And fairly generic info on the TSA website;

With everything that is going on right now, I clearly do not want to take a risk of spending the next X years in jail and being a prime example of a white domestic terrorist trying to board an aircraft!!

May be easier just to either wait till I fly from Westchester of just purchase in FL

I would take that as you can not and I repeat can not take it into NYC or you will likely be arrested. You can ship the gun to yourself as an alternative. I would not risk it as it will likely end badly for you. You can call to see if they will allow you to bring it in, but I wouldn’t count on it.

I believe that a big issue is if a flight is delayed over night the airport would give you your guns back . Now you are doing an overnight stay with handguns without a permit . I understand this may be rare perhaps the policy is different than in the past. ... Also theft is not uncommon at many airports. .. I believe this has been posted in the past.
On a side note I knew a stewardess in the past and flights were delayed all the time.

I believe that a big issue is if a flight is delayed over night the airport would give you your guns back . Now you are doing an overnight stay with handguns without a permit . I understand this may be rare perhaps the policy is different than in the past. ... Also theft is not uncommon at many airports. .. I believe this has been posted in the past.

NYC says you need a NYC permit to bring a pistol into NYC, he does not have one. They will likely not accept the federal rule on transport and you are declaring the firearm. It’s not worth the hassle because the chances of you needing the gun in that trip are so rare.
But yes you are correct if you get stuck and there are a lot of canceled flights these days you’re screwed. Also don’t think the TSA won’t call the NYPD a on you.

It’s not worth it. I’m not sure what the rules are in FL and where you’re going to be staying but look into shipping yourself the gun and then fly outside of NYC aim the return.

Flying FROM NYC airport is totally different than flying THRU the same airport. FROM has ground travelwith a gun that you are not allowed to have there, simply put DON'T DO IT!

The plan is leaving the gun in FL, so it will not be coming back with me - it will remain in my FL home

Ok - shipping from myself to myself in FL doesnt appear to be too straightforward either from what I can tell no matter what shipping option i use

FEDEX - need to be a "licensee" which I think means FFL

Only way to legally do it is sending it to a FFL. USPS doesn't do handguns period. Pretty cut and dry.

You don't need to be a FFL to send it, but you need to let UPS or FedEx know there is a pistol in it and it's going to a FFL addressee.

Make sure it's unloaded and no ammo goes with it. Needs to be insured and properly sealed.

Going through Westchester is no problem.

Simply have firearm appropriately cased, declare it, officer inspects it, case in luggage gets closed, and it goes into checked luggage. You then pick it up at your destination.

When I transported some pistols to Florida, I had my non-TSA locked pistol case secured inside a TSA-locked suitcase. Looked like any other piece of luggage

Funny part: After I declared the pistols, the gate agent took me over to the luggage screener. Luggage screener said, "I'm going to run your bag through the scanner. If it comes up with a warning, I'll call the airport police over to examine it." Of course it showed up as a "warning." I'd just declared that it contained pistols. Anyway, Westchester airport police were very nice and polite. Officer asked me to open the case. He wanted to verify that the pistols were all unloaded and that they were on my permit. He asked me to show him the serial numbers on the pistols. I told him that he could inspect whatever he wanted, but that he'd have to handle the pistols. I did not want to be on airport surveillance touching a firearm.

Whole inspection took about 5 minutes and I was then on my way to the gate.

Yeah good shout - I don’t think I would be comfortable picking up the handgun in the airport either ……….even though it is clearly unloaded

You have to go to the hub and you can’t use a small local franchise place. As far as I knew the hub in Buffalo of UPS used to ship pistols. I had to return one to the manufacturer through fed ex and ruger isn’t an FFL from what I know. Call the UPS or Fed Ex hub nearest you and ask.
USPS a will not allow you to ship and it’s a federal building so you can not bring a firearm onto USPS property so don’t go that route either.

18 USC § 926A (firearm owners protection act) should cover what he's doing and it is perfectly legal.

I am sure NYPD will agree after you've sat in jail for a while and spent $100k for a lawyer to explain it to them.

They will conveniently forget all about that before they arrest the next guy.

Just went through the same thing booking a flight home (Binghamton) from Montana.

I just avoided the NYC/Newark airports and found a flight into Syracuse. Only layover is also where I can legally possess my G19.

Just avoid the commie airports next time.

I think I will just wait and purchase an additional hand gun in FL, rather than risk any hassle - I can then drive/take all my guns down to FL when I finally move down permanently, unless I fly out of Westchester in the next few months

Just crazy the hoops we need to jump through

Maybe the upcoming Supreme Court case will resolve this for NYC......................but who knows

In fact - quick update

I have just found a FEDEX Hub 1.1 miles from my current address and they deal with "dangerous Goods shipping"

So going to go along and ask then for their process and see what they say - will update once I get the info


Ok - just back from FEDEX...................that is a NO

They will only ship a firearm from Business to Business (eg, a repair) or from an FFL to FFL

And in fact, I just checked their website;

"NONLICENSEE Shippers"

Non licensees are prohibited from shipping firearms with FEDEX

Are you legally an FL resident? If not no pistol for you from an FFL in FL.
