Q: Is it legal to drive my long guns from NY to Georgia?.
The guns are compliant in both states.
I am a NY resident with a GA home.
I have a GA CCW.
I drive straight through with the locked guns in my trunk.
There is no ammo in the car.
I do not stop or leave the car unattended.

NRA-ILA | Guide To The Interstate Transportation Of Firearms

Federal law does not restrict individuals from transporting legally acquired firearms across state lines for lawful purposes. Therefore, no federal permit is required for the interstate transportation of firearms.

Any local laws that would prohibit your journey are pre-empted by federal law, provided you do not make any unnecessary stops.

Some localities (NYC, I'm looking at you) like to ignore that provision, and will force you to pay for a lawyer if you get caught in them. You won't be convicted of anything, but they will cause you as much pain as they can manage out of spite.

In fact you can even have ammo in the car. Just keep it in a separate container from your guns not accessible to the driver.

There are federal statutes which govern the transport of long guns from state to state. Provided what you possess is legal in your starting point and destination your good to go. Your are OK for necessary stops, i.e. fuel, bathroom, food. You aren't necessarily protected if you stop and make sight seeing adventures or shopping. If you stay close to the highway on your stops in the extremely unlikely event you are ever stopped and questioned in a state like MD you should be covered by claiming you are making an essential stop for fuel and then proceeding to immediately leave the state.

But that brings me to next issue. I don't know where in NY you are starting from or what route you are taking. Depending on the route the only locations I can see being any type of issue would be Delaware, NJ, Maryland and God forbid DC. Try to avoid them if possible, or since they're very small states don't stop there get gas in PA and then wait again till VA. Stick to near the speed limit, use turn signals etc. Don't give a reason to be stopped. Even if your stopped if you get stopped for a minor traffic infraction of say going 7mph over the limit bon I-95 there should be no reason whatsoever to be discussing firearms. Keep them locked and out of sight. Don't be nervous or fidgety. It should be a clear cut "do you know why I pulled you over? You were speeding, here's your ticket".

I think you're way over stressing and over thinking it. You're not breaking any laws. I Know it sucks when we have to be so confused and nervous to do simple tasks and exercise our rights moving legally owned property.

I live in WNY. My route south is easy all gun friendly territory. I-90 to PA, I-79 South to WV, I-77 South to NC and wherever else. No concerns at all on that route

Know that unnecessary stops does not include stopping for gas or a meal, even lodging!

The question with lodging is whether or not you may remove the firearms from your vehicle and keep them in your room (possess) while not traveling. For me, I'd keep them in my car, but that's me as I'm not anal about it or worried that while I sleep someone miraculously would know there's long guns in my trunk!

But a day trip? Certainly good to go!

None of the "problem areas" are large enough that you really need to spend the night.

Just drive another hour first and sleep somewhere that doesn't hate you.

Get several like minded associates, keep your arms handy, form a phalanx and take whatever route you feel would be the most enjoyable to the group, kind'a like Sherman's march.

I took a 870 with slugs and buckshot on vacation with me. No way in hell was I driving through cities like Baltimore during the Chauvin trial without protection. I just kept it in a soft case out of site for gas and pee breaks.
