Traveling in PA.

I will be going through PA soon as I head west. All the states I am going through accept NY or my UTAH permit except PA and NJ. I plan I locking my gun in a lock box through NJ but I usually spend the night in PA at a hotel. Do I leave it in car [not my choice], bring it in the locked box to the hotel room, or just pass through and spend the night in Ohio? What say you all?

I am also sending in my NH non-resident applic which I believe PA will still accept and make the above question unnecessary if it arrives in time.

You can have a gun on you in PA with no permit. Just can't CCW. You can have it unlocked in your car, open carry, whatever.

I'm in PA right now CCWing with my PA permit.

I'd bring it in the hotel and open carry.

Pennsylvania does recognize the New Hampshire nonresident permit.

Pennsylvania only requires a permit to carry concealed. You can take your handgun into the hotel room with you, at no risk of legal repercussions. It must only be in a locked box when you and it are in your vehicle.

its very confusing and its impossible to do internet research since most articles don't have dates so you never know if you are looking at the most recent laws.

^This. Its very easy, simple, and fast. All they do is the equivalent of a NICS check and when you pass they hand you tour licesnse. However of your NYS license is restricted PA won't give you a CCW permit either.

Bring it with you in a locked box in PA. Even in to the hotel without worries. Avoid NJ.

Unfortunately PA won't issue you a license to carry firearms then. Locked box is your best option.

About six months ago, I sent an email to the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office. The answer that I received was that they will honor the New Hampshire nonresident LTC. You're better off going to the folks who make the agreements instead of asking anonymous folks on an internet forum.

Not if you have an NYS restricted permit. Sounds like OP is gtg with the NH licesnse though.

PA is an open carry state without a license except for Philadelphia. Possession is not crime. You can bring it with you into the hotel and possess it or open carry it if you wish without a license.

With that said, stop by and get a license if you can while driving through.

I am getting NH non res license. and will stop and get the PA since I drive right through Centre Ccounty as I head to Ohio. I hear that that sheriff still gives to NYer's with a restricted license. On my way there I will either open carry or keep locked up if the NH doesn't arrive on time.

Thanks everyone. And just for insurance I will do what Bob did and email the attorney general for confirmation. That email in my pocket will surely ease my mind.

So glad that Ohio and Indiana are reasonable and now the only part of my frequent trips that will suck is NJ, NYC, Long Island.

Yes and no. Pa is open carry without a license, but only when walking. You cannot I repeat cannot carry on a vehicle with out a LTCF (license to carry firearm) it is no longer considered open carry (this counts for anything that isn't walking)

Edit as for traveling with a handgun in PA without a LTCF it's not just a simple, open carry oh hey time to lock it in my trunk until I get from A to B, you are only allowed to transport a firearm from home to range/gunstore/gunsmith or from range/gunstore/gunsmith to home, absolutely no stopping not even for gas (there are like 2 or 3 exceptions, but no even gas station is not one of them)

if you have a smart phone, get a CCW app about the laws. some are updated all the time.

In NJ a lock box is not enough, you must unload and and lock the gun and ammo in separate boxes!
NJ also has some issue with hollow points, so look into that!

Just dont CCW in PA without a permit, all else is just about fine.
Never leave your guns in a car!

To be honest, my greatest fear with my Sig P238, before I was a licensed PA CCWERer at the time, was my parking meter running out.

(And I'm serious about that, @Darth has, to this point, avoided every traffic AND parking ticket. I don't want to break that record.

I (HYPOTHETICALLY) carried my 238 in my glove box, went to Scranton (a bit short of my diving Mecca Dutch Springs), went in, paid $20, and left totally legal. As I thought I was before.

And a $20 fee and 20 minutes being the difference between a criminal record and freedom is OUTRAGEOUS. On the part of the gubmint.

Update to freedom. On the 25th I filled out NH Non-resident application. It was was mailed either theme or the next day. Yesterday 9/1 my permit was in my mailbox. Less than a week turnaround time.

It's not a matter of all states accepting a NY or Utah permit. As long as you legally own the pistol, you can travel through any state as long as it is locked up. If I am not mistaken, no other state accepts a NY permit.

Actually, it is NY that won't accept non-residents... And the reciprocal is that no other state (AG) will honor NY, even when NY's vetting process is one of toughest in the nation.

I'd say, VA is probably the only one currently, their law says if you are legal in your home state, you're good to go there!

As for safe passage, you can stop for gas, food and such, but you can't stop with no purpose!

Anyways... If going through NJ, I would have a "Locked" box, this way you can maintain your expectation of privacy and it'll only be opened with a warrant. Just my opinion... Lol

Tech there are parts of NY that give out non resident licenses.
Chemung county will issue to Bradford county PA residences
