We have lack of competition now. Where I live, my only choices are Spectrum, Spectrum, and Spectrum. Satellite isn't an option because my condo faces the wrong way.

I can only get water from one source. (The town) I can't dig my own well. If they were to cut my water off because of my political beliefs, how will I get it? The same goes with electricity. Sure I can move and get my own well and solar panels but what if I can't afford it and am stuck? I can do without but then the state may take my kids away for neglect.

There has to be some regulations for public utilities. An ISP is a utility.

Well, if we treated digital infra like we do physical infra, perhaps the answer is to have government lay fiber.

With roads, the government maintains the asphalt, but not the trucks, deliveries, etc that make use of them.

With public fiber lines going along roadways, or through major areas, it would reduce the cost of ISPs setting up shop and promote competition within the industry. It’s really that base infra cost that is prohibitive and allows monopolies like spectrum to happen.

If not from the government itself, perhaps we could give exclusivity agreements to whatever company lays public fiber — letting them recoup their expenses via guaranteed business to a particular market for a period of time? Might be a good free market compromise.

Anyway, just a thought.

@libertysnake you make very good points but I would point out that your last paragraph is essentially what happened in large part of NY, which is why some people here have limited alternative providers (if any) to Spectrum.

Having groups of private company's basically control elections by censoring speech is not what this country was founded upon .

I idea of censored speech is anti American.

If you choose to have a forum that is closed to the public ,have at it. If you choose to have a forum open to the public, then the laws governing public speech apply.

There a far Left reaching newspapers and there are far Right leaning newspapers. I do not want the Government to come in and say to either paper that they need to publish more stories from the opposing way of thinking.

If an ISP, for example, is limiting what the user can view, stop using that ISP.

years ago some isp's were blocking file sharing sites .. you were only blocked because you used there DNS server look up .. Auto generated ip# and DNS # from your ISP .. you still had the same ISP , but manually put in a foreign DNS # in your settings .. your good to go ..
