On March 9, 2017, U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) posted a request for information regarding a new personal defense weapon (PDW) on FedBizOpps, the federal government’s main contracting website. Any interested company would have to provide information on a kit that uses the standard M4A1 lower receiver as the core of the gun.

The weapon can’t be any longer than 26 inches with the stock extended, only 7.5 inches high and weigh 5.5 pounds or less. With the stock folded or collapsed, SOCOM wants the gun to shrink to no more than 17 inches long and hopefully just a mere 15 inches

You would be correct this is not an assault rifle. Literally the only thing that this checks off for what is considered an assault rifle (besides rifling) is its shoulder fired

I find myself wondering if a cartridge like the 7.5FK wouldn't make an excellent cartridge for ultra compact PDWs? The 300BLK is pretty underwhelming in its ballistics, the 5.56 is heavily compromised in very short barrels, the 9mm is limited in what it can do.
The 7.5 can generate over 800ft-lbs of energy from a 6" barrel. Flat trajectory, relatively compact cartridge, the ability to be set up for excellent penetration or devastating terminal effect. Its spiritual predecessor, the 7.62x25 Tokarev, provided great service in this role.

If you need something ultra compact then I think some kind of pistol caliber is necessary. Rifle calibers in really short barrels, RSBRs(tm), lose too much of their effect to be worthwhile I think. Plus all that extra blast is not at all conducive to CQB situations.

Manufacturers may refer to certain weapons as "assault" rifles, but that certainly isn't a universal naming convention.

And within Table of Equipment used by a typical combat arms units, there IS NO such thing as an "assault" weapon. There are machineguns, pistols, carbines or rifles (depending on barrel and stock length), mortars, rocket launchers, grenade launchers.

The only weapon that has "assault" in its official designation is the SMAW (Shoulder-Launched Multi-purpose Assault Weapon). If a grunt is foolish enough to lose positive control of his T/E assigned weapon, his SNCO his going stomp his dick...because he lost control of his rifle. No one in the military uses the term "assault" when referring to a weapon. "Assault" is indicative of a tactical task, not a weapon. You can assault any enemy position with any number of weapons.

Well maybe I don't know as much as Larry Vickers, but I certainly know how the difference between "accept" and "except." That should count for something.

Because during my time in, I never once heard someone say "clean your assault rifle" or "grab your assault weapon from the armory." If you did hear that term thrown around, I'd like to know what type of unit you were in.

Back during WWII, squads did have "assault" sections, which were armed differently from the rest of the squad. You have to remember, back then most troops were still carrying around bolt-action rifles, so those who carried semi or fully auto rifles had a different tactical focus than the rest. Nowadays, every soldier has a semi-auto or select-fire rifle at his disposal....there is no such thing as an "assault" section within a squad. Every modern fireteam is pretty much self-sufficient in terms of small arms firepower. No one in the military uses the term "assault" rifle...it's just a rifle or carbine.

Back when bolt-action's were the prevalent type of firearm, semi and full auto rifles were employed in a certain fashion by certain groups within infantry units. There was a tactical distinction between someone carrying a bolt-action rifle and someone carrying a submachine gun.

Nowadays, that distinction doesn't exist. No one uses the term "assault" rifle in modern military parlance. It's not an official term, or at least one that is current use. Again, I have to ask: what military unit did you serve with? Because if you were truly in the military, none of this should be news to you.

The military does have a definition of assault rifle.

The U.S. Army defines assault rifles as "short, compact, selective-fire weapons that fire a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges." ... It must be capable of selective fire.
