Careful now. People will start clowning you about you walking around with 14 gauge steel on your chest because their .45 ACP manstoppers can't penetrate common barriers.

Very disappointed in my beloved 9mm Kurtz, well, and the venerable .45 ACP. I still believe aim is the most critical factor and if I come up against this guy, well, I guess I'll just have to hope I have my sneakers on, and it's raining.

I have come across people behind car doors, metal display stands in Walmart, ect. If any of them ever took cover behind them while firing at you......

Probably. But guys think that the number 230 is bigger so it's better.
They are obsessed with more grain but more grain only penetrates more if you shoot FMJ or truncated cones at soft tissue.
Through barriers you need speed.

I too would like to have seen more on the ammo, barrel lengths and speeds. I did think you could see the 357sig whooped everything else. I'm really starting to think about picking up a few guns in that round.
I didn't seem to do dramatically better than the 9mm though. I think the 357 Sig is a whizzbang cartridge but it's more expensive and I lose capacity vs a 9mm for not enough benefit.
The 185gr +Ps are well regarded by most .45 folk.
They do kick more however.
The defunct .45 Super would have little problem with this test but we are dealing with near magnum levels of recoil at that point.
I disagree you can see a lot more of the bullet pass through and the metal appears to have a bigger deformation. I will agree with the capacity issue but in this state thats' a moot point.

I agree with this and even in this dump of a state with its 10 round mags I see no reason to pick up an additional, more expensive caliber...
When I upgrade from 9mm power levels I will go to the 10mm. A 10mm would cream this steel plate.
I don;t see the expense being too great if you reload. Or buy a conversion barrel to practice with 9mm. Maybe $5 more a year with defensive ammo rotation.
I agree I would like to have seen that and 40 S&W in the test just round everything out.
Would have looked very similar to the 357 SIG I'd reckon.
I think it would have punched through but I don't think it would have been as good as the 357sig.

.357 Sig will penetrate thicker metal where the 9mm will fail. .357 Magnum will penetrate even thicker metal where the .357 Sig will fail. A rifle with more velocity will penetrate even thicker metal where the .357 Magnum will fail. Ect.

It's all a balance thing. Sure a .357 Sig can penetrate thicker metals. But at the cost of more recoil, blast, concussion, cost, time reloading, ect.
A 9mm will do well against most common barriers so they are more sensible to carry and stock up on given those factors.
At the same token, a rifle will outperform any handgun but it's easier to carry a pistol just the same as a 9mm is easier to control and stock up on compared to a .357 Sig.
All about balance.

Miles, I have a 357 SIG and it is a very nice cartridge to shoot, low recoil, high speed and very accurate. It is a bit pricey to shot a lot, when compared to the 9mm, but what isn't. Like you said, you can get a 9mm barrel and at pistol range there is little difference twixt them to build muscle memory on.

I would love to comparison shoot 2 of the same pistols in the 2 different caliber. Maybe the recoil would be enough to effect me maybe it wouldn't. Looks like a I need a new barrel for my G22.

Mine is a SIG 229 with .40 and .357 SIG and the difference isn't all that much, but then to me its a fairly hefty gun which tends to minimize things like that.

oh come on now, we all know the military and the cops do not choose anything based on what it can do. its a complicated formula of what the least amount they can spend on important things divided by how much money they make in kickback and campaign contributions minus doing the least amount of faulty research.

Ok. I'll give you that. Most are copy cats. The FBI does however do the leg work for them. No .45 ACP there either.
