Politicians, they are stupid. They are dumb and they are ignorant.
They do not really believe what they are saying. If they did, they would have this answer memorized. Would not be that difficult if they really believed what they say they believe.
I would have much more respect if they just came out and said something like, "fuck all of you. What we really want to do is take all of the guns from the citizens that we deem not worthy of guns." I may not agree with them, but I might have more respect for them.
As for defining what an Assault Weapon is, if i were of the thinking that these people are, I could fully describe what one is and why it should be banned here in the US.
It would go something like this:
Any type of rifle or semi-auto firearm that could, with or without an external magazine, hold or store more than five rounds of ammo at a time. Any firearm that could be reloaded in a quick, one or two step process. I would continue, I would go into the ballistics the speed in which a round could exit the firearm and how quickly those rounds could be fired. I would discuss the ease in which this type of firearm could be hidden and brought into operation.
I would stop saying this stupid phrase of Military Style weapon. That is just filled with all kinds of ignorance. The 38 revolver is Military. The M9 as well. The 1911 was designed as a Military weapon. Many other handguns are and were designed/used by our Military. Countless shotguns have been used and or designed for military use. Wanna get rid of them as well? Some bolt action guns were designed specifically for our Armed forces and adapted for use in civilian life.
Again, just be honest with the American people. The elected and the appointed want only those that they deem worthy of guns to have them.
If they knew anything, they would realize and understand that there are many different kinds of guns that can do far more damage in a killing spree than the AR or the AK.
They would also understand that less than 3% of these "Mass" shootings are done with this type of weapon. For every American killed by one of these firearms, at least 500 are killed with basic handguns.

On the conservative treehouse the phrase "pretend not to know "is often used. These officials do indeed know what a woman is ... or an assault weapon is .... ANYTHING they decide to define it. Therein lies the crux ... Feign ignorance .. We have heard the term assault pistol used in this last shooting. In a few months that also will be the talking point of what needs to be banned... and a year from now any autoloading handgun will fit that description. ... Weapons of war you know .. Then every hunting rifle with a scope is a sniper rifle.. .. After all most can, when sighted in hit a target at 200 yards correctly ... That folks is the battle we will soon look at
