I had a similar experience years ago here in Florida. I was working at an FFL when I got a call from my wife, saying that two guys had knocked on the door but she ignored them due to their vehicle (Cadillac escalade with huge chrome wheels). When she didn't answer the door, they tried the security screen door knob. That's when she called me on her cell phone. As we were on the line together our home phone rang (with a 202 area code), it was the guys outside, claiming to be federal agents, looking for me. She kept them on the line while I hurried home, about a seven minute drive. As I pulled in the driveway the ATF IDs came out. Turns out they were there about a gun I sold a few years before, which I had a bill of sale for. Turns out the guy I sold it to sold it to an individual at a gun show (FTF, no paperwork required at the time). It had been found at a crime scene.
It freaked out my wife - she had grabbed her gun after they tried the doorknob (proud of her) and had me on guard when I pulled in the driveway ( cross ways so I exited behind the engine block/tires). She kept them under watch while I retrieved the bill of sale.
