The Saws are getting phased out anyway. The Marines already scraped them and the Army is looking for a replacement.

They are heavy, inaccurate, and cumbersome for a 4 man fireteam member. It handicapps him and makes the fireteam slower since they have to go at his speed and also help him overcome obstacles that would otherwise be easy to navigate without a 20lbs weapon with a belt or huge green box on the bottom of it. It also takes one man out of the equation when clearing rooms since it's difficult to do so with a saw.

If a SAW gunner is called upon to clear rooms he would swap out with an M4. For any kind of a sustained fire role the belt fed M249 is the lightest gun in the inventory. And the SAW is not being eliminated, just supplemented by the HK monstrosity.
Finally there are 100 round soft pouches that can be used when on the move.

Its hard for me to say definitively though as I was artillery and my experience is that of a red leg operating as an ad hoc infantry unit. I was supposed to be the SAW gunner for my squad though, before I got sick anyway.

Not everyone is mounted. Leg units in Afghanistan aren't. It's impossible to be.
