Not sure if Ive ever seen one before but I thought seeing it was cool as hell. Its called a Snowy Owl,,,looked it up on wikipedia. It let us get within 10yds of it so I could take a picture with my mobile. Did not try to get any closer, as we were already scared, we were going to scare it away.

I seen an owl while I was walking in the woods this fall. It was right at dusk so I didn't get a good look. I was setting up my spot for turkey hunting in the morning by breaking a few branches off the pine tree. It flew out of the pine tree about 10-15 feet above me. I then heard 2-3 others calling.
I had a snowy owl once. It was dead. A smoke stack In my town was being cleaned out and it was dead at the bottom. It was given to my dad. He called to get it stuffed and the taxidermist was like we never had this conversation you should call the DEC. my dad did and within a few hours a DEC officer was there to pick it up.

Ive been researching them. They are not uncommon in NY state, they fly down here from the Arctic because food gets scarce there during the winter. They arrive during the late fall and leave before the buds are on the trees come spring. They don't breed in NY, they breed above the Arctic Circle. They are one of the biggest, heaviest owls out of all and one of the most quietest flying birds, with a wingspan of 5.5ft. Like most owls their eyes don't move, their head does though and it can rotate 270 degrees. Nocturnal hunters with binocular vision but have issues seeing things up close. Think that about covers what Ive found. One other thing it stated,,,the owl doesnt make any calling noises or hoots and screeches while in NY, just in the Arctic.

We saw one a few years back. It was very cool, as they don't often come that far south. It was all the way across a field, though, so we weren't able to see any details like this. Awesome that you were able to get so close AND get a picture to share!!
