Westchester Pistol Permit Application Question

Hi All,

I am a new member of the forum, and also very new to the pistol permit application process here in Westchester county. I have begun completing the required forms, scheduling training, etc.

I have a question regarding the 4 character references. The only restrictions I see in the instruction handbook states that the reference may not be a blood relative or in-law.
Could anyone confirm if there are any restrictions on the location of where your references reside? Do my references have to be residents of Westchester county?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

There is no requirements shown on the application form to state they need to be Westchester residents................i do think they would need to at least be US based though!!

In the past your references had to be Westchester County residents.
They have since relaxed that requirement.

One of my references lives out of NY state. Do you think an out of state reference would be accepted?

He needs to list their address and have them personally sign the physical copies. No way for him to keep it a secret.

Call ahead and get permission to use out of state references. You aren’t going to sneak anything by them. Don’t even try.

How are you going to get the signatures and notarizations? I was always told by my local shop that you should stick to NYS residents. They do not have to be Westchester County.

I used 2 references that live in NYC..

I would call the office and ask.. worst they say is no you can’t use out of state persons.. I’ve heard of people mailing all the paperwork to their friend out of state UPS and get them to sign/notarize then mail it back

Sort of an older thread, but as a reference, when I applied in orange county I was told they had to be Orange County residents. I asked if anyone else could be used and they asked me who. I responded "The assistant commandant of the Marine Corps". I was told no. Gotta say, that was the best reference I had at the time. Tough standards in Orange County. Guess they didn't want a reference from a guy with the nickname Spider.

I was told by the people who fill out the paperwork and provide application assistance services (worth it, BTW), to NOT use LEO, and prominent people as references.

Great question, it used to be that the references were required to be Westchester residents. It took me six years to acquire those references that I trusted because I was a transplant. When they told me my paperwork was expired I said I didn't know enough people in Westchester because I was a transplant and they told me they would accept New York State references. Now the handbook is changed and they only need to be New York State references, iirc. Double check the handbook, or worst case scenario just call them.
