Been all over the USA. Central NY is one of the nicest places on earth. 4 seasons including a breathtaking autumn, great hunting, land prices that are shockingly cheap (my farm on 200+ acres with a 5 BR main house and 2 big barns was $250K in 2010), almost zero taxes (my property tax is $1,200 a year whereas my GA farm was $7K a year for a quarter of the land), you can get to Boston, NYC, and DC with a day trip, best pizza on earth (no offense to Chicago), fishing at 2 Great Lakes within 150 miles (Ontario, Erie), no goober rednecks like GA had (OMG Georgia was bad!). So far I have lived at / been stationed in Georgia, South Carolina, Utah, Texas, New York, Connecticut, and Ohio; and for work I have been 4 days a week (Sunday afternoon to Thursday night for 25 years) to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. For countries (thanks to SAP and USAF) I have been to every country in Europe, been stationed in the Philippines, did a tour in Saudi Arabia, have done short visits to South Africa, and for Asia have done PH, Singapore, South Korea, and Japan. I really really REALLY love NY and wouldn't leave this state for all the money in the world.
Yeah we have a little bit of a 2A issue; but most of us have CCW, C&R, and 50 to 100 weapons. We bitch that we don't like the stocks or lack of flash supressors. BFD.
In North Luzon the people complained that they had to live in bamboo huts underneath bridges that USA built for them and had to shit in the same creek they fished for their food. We have the best cancer hospital on earth (Sloan Kettering), best colleges for our kids (columbia, einstein school of medicine, Rensellaer poly, SUNY IT, etc), hundreds of miles between the forests and the big cities (zombie free zones!), more culture than any other State (museum of modern art, museum of natural history, statue of liberty, empire state bldg, dozens of other museums, bronx zoo, brooklyn botanical gargens, ny library, all those greenwich village bars that have bands every night, little italy, chinatown, mets, yankees, bills, jets, giants, rangers, islanders, knicks, nets, NASCAR at watkins glen, niagara fall, and a zillion other things to do i'm not even thinking of). People talk about shitholes like Texas and I LOL for real. Yeah they have a few more guns. And 120 degree days, hurricanes, flat desert that's ugly as shit, no cultural centers whatsoever, and is basically a miniature Bombay because every Indian that comes over to do IT moves there.

Thanks. You guys make the thread not me. I just barely started a subject.
What I want to do is to see if we can get some firearms, outdoors, etc.. related stuff going so by knowing what people like and perhaps
are looking for we can start a few threads that add value to some level or another.
Otherwise the whole thing can become like the google hang outs and quite boring.
I'm not a logical person, in a pinch I run on instinct. I'm not a very organized person, long term planning is not something I'm good at. I think quickly on my feet and act decisively.

I want to make a .50 BMG "cannon". I wondered about a falling breech, auto eject like an artillery piece, built on an M2 barrel. I don't know that it could even be done, and furthermore, since we live in NY, if it would be fun it has got to be illegal.

I'm interested to know why if I drive 60mph for an hour, I don't travel 60 miles. I'm interested to know if eggs really can be made to stand on edge during the Equinox... I'm interested to know if toilets really flush backwards south of the equator. I'm interested to know who would really want to survive a Zombie Apocalypse

The best way might be to build a rifle kit so it meets all the requirements for a rifle like any other rifle.
Is there a specific goal in mind with it like accuracy wise or just to burn powder?
I am asking because there are a hand of very powerful super magnum cartriges that can use magnum actions that will cost a fraction
of the 50 caliber and will shoot better and further. Not as much power at the average ranges but not too far behind.

Also would like to hear input from our resident reloaders and armchair ballisticians on the ultimate hypothetical 6mm 5.56/7.62 replacement. A topic that has been dabbled in both here and the other place but not fully explored.

you mean a potential replacement for the current 5.56 service round? I don't think there is one round that can replace both the 5.56 and 308 but I can
think of a number of rounds that can replace each of them very easily. In fact the military will only have to replace the barrels.
I am more interested in practical application guns, I find myself to be out of my depth on the high precision end of things, though that thread is fascinating.
Ah, yes but I wonder about that. I say that modern powders, projectiles and metallurgy it may be possible once one accepts that there must be compromise involved. I take the 6mm Lee Navy as my inspiration, it had much potential but the tech of the day left it unrealized.
Let's see there's a ton but let me see how many I can think of.
Shooting
1. Currently pistols take up most of my time. The reason is because I'm horrible shot with them and I'm a perfectionist.
2. Long distance. This is really where my heart is. Due to money and lack of shooting partners all the work involved I've times it back. I still ring steel at 600 yds a couple times a year with my 308. I have access to a 1200 yds shot and don't take advantage of it. It's a shame really.
3. Shotgun/sporting clays. I grew up shooting 100-200 rounds a week. I always had fun doing it but it never sparked my passion. I still like to get out a couple times a year though.
Reloading I love it almost as much as shooting.
1. I have grown to love to reload pistol ammo. The ease and quantity you can do is satisfying.
2. Precision rifle ammo. I really have stopped reloading for it. I'm just about put of ammo and will have to shake the dust off. I really hate trickling up every powder charge. I think I will buy a powder tickler and scale combo if I ever get back into long distance shooting again, hopefully that will be enough to keep my interest.
3. The newest passion casting. I still have to cast a bullet of my own,but am currently smelting down range scrap when ever I get a free moment. I don't have a good scale to weigh what I have now but I have one 30 cal ammo can full of lead bars and am working on my second. I will have to start up a casting thread here when I get time.
4. Swegding. This kind of goes with the last item. I real up on it all the time and the thought of being able to produce your own bullet for rifles for next to nothing intrigues me. The equipment is stupid expensive so I don't know if I will ever take the jump.
Hunting
1. My favorite hunting is rabbit hunting over a well trained dog. Growing up I use to kill well over 100 a year. I miss those days. I don't have the time or proper place to have a dog of my own so I'm at the whim of other people to take me.
2. Deer hunting. I love it but my family has a pissing match every year around it. Because I refuse to participate in it I always get last pick of stand. What kills them is I'm perfectly fine sitting in the same stand year after year. The other kicker is I usually limit out every year. My main goal with deer hunting is to fill the freezer every year. We process our own deer so this is good cheap meat I count on.
3. Goose hunting. This might almost be my favorite it's a close second to rabbit. Sadly my old hunting grounds aren't available and the new ones are so so. Also I have a hard time making getting out during season. It seems like I'm always stupid busy during season.
Maple syrup
This really was a passion of mine ever since I got out of the military. We currently have around 900 taps on a modern vacuum system. We have a reverse osmosis and a 30" x 8' evaporator and made around 350 gallons last year. I seem to do work on the operation every weekend. I love it but with the young family and starting out my new career I find myself not have having the time and enjoying it like I use to. So the current goal of the operation is to become more efficient. We want to be able to make a 1/2 gallon a tap easily then we will look into expanding again.
I think I hit the big ones. Money and time hinder most of my ambitions right now. I'm trying to fix that bye getting my PE stamp. The amount of studying is staggering. I hope to pass the first part before deer season this year.

What do i like? well ive had many "hobbies" but there are a few things that have stuck with me through life. I love being a father, and i put 99% of my time into that. As for interests ive had since i was little they are:
Guns (been shooting since 6 years old, heavy emphasis on training as compared to only bench shooting, but i do enjoy that too)
Dirtbikes/quads/motorcycles (been doing this as long as ive been shooting , and was a licensed racer for many years)
Fitness
Survivalism/prepardness (always loved the aspect of living off the land, even as a kid id build shelters, eat wild edibles, hunt, trap, camp, etc...)
But there are other things too like:
Archery
Hand to hand combatives
Genealogy (including dna research)
Studying Western european history

Not sure how to get one, but back when I lived in GA in the town next to me were 3 folks who made a company out of doing 50 BMG's to be based on an AR. They ended up selling the company to Cerebus, who also owns Remington and some others. Google something called the Cobb 50. Skip and Buzz used to sell those things for like $2,500 or so. I'm not sure you can make anything wonderful for less than that. I went with the Barrett M99 for $3K with Pelican and scope. Not in love with it. Thing weighs a shit ton, ammo weighs a shit ton (lifting a 150 round can will break your arm), recoil is serious, it will shake things off the wall at any homes within 500 yards of the thing, and I think ammo is extremely expensive now. And my fear is your round skips off a rock on the way into the ground and goes another 5 miles down the road and kills someone. Those rounds will travel a LONG ways.

Realistically it's up to you for that many taps if the land lays right tubing is great. If it's really steep there's a new innovation with smaller tubing that creates a natural vacuum. Cool physics theory and application actually. But the sap collection for that size is the easy part. The hard part is evaporating it. If you use a turkey fryer with propane you will use more propane than the syrup is worth. For that size you have to use wood. There are many home made rigs that work and there are hobby sized professional rigs. We used one of those when we started, but they have come a long way in the past 4 years. If your interested in more mane PM me and maybe I can make it your way or you my way. Our operation is in morrisville so not too far from you.

If you have family in some other State; buy an AN-M2 and keep it there. Just break it out once a year for Knob Creek. And I can almost guarantee to you that a Ma Deuce will double in value in the next 5 years because of the upcoming Hitlery 2A smackdown.

He also left behind some huge barrels that the wife said not to ruin; but someone must have used them for targets. Not saying it was me; just saying someone with rifles may have destroyed them all.
