what BaoFeng should i be looking for now ??

Does the cable say Baofeng on it? That could be the issue. I have the same radio so something else to look at is where the cable plugs in. They don't fit this model very well and require some careful trimming so it plugs in the radio completely.

Yeah, keep getting an error that radio did not respond. Will screw around more when kids asleep.

i don't remember what handheld radio i had .. i think alinco it was just a 2 and 5 watt ham radio .,.. but the 50 watt linear amp was cheep and not a bad price for the ringo 2meter antenna (base station) .. its like 18 foot tall .. have up up 20 feet in the air from the base of it .. .. good low loss coax into the house ..

i'm in the lower end of the county here and could hit the Bristol (ski slope ) repeater with no problem ..

my 25 watt mobile unit didn't the amp from in the house ..

also with the hand held and the amp .. i could hit the MIR sat and did make contact with the space shuttle on there pass over once ..
all most fell out of the chair when i heard my call sign come back .. ...

get your ham ticket .. then you can get the amp and boost the power if needed .. last i knew you can up to 1500 watts . with restriction ..
which is simple .. use only the power you need for reliable communications ..

I can't remember for sure but I think my mom has a Larson mag mount that works well. I don't remember what brand I have on my truck either lol, it's a NMO mount anyway so not what you want.
I wouldn't use a marine antenna, the band starts higher than ham.

also you may find dual band antenna .. one antenna for 2 diff bands of frequencys .. 150 . and 440 .. and so on .. and thats for transmitting

if you just listening .. a coat hanger is all thats needed LOL ..

2m ham starts 145mhz or there abouts, marine starts in the upper 150's I believe. Best to stay with a ham antenna

yeah it like 145 to 147 to 8 .. .. but if you needed to transmit in the 155 ( leo band) it will work just some single loss ..

2 meter and 440 ( 70cm ) if i remember

and thats a 1/4 wave i bet .. a 5/8 wave antenna will be in the 4 to 5 foot tall range

Diamond may be what's on my truck now, or it was the one that got ripped out of my roof....ooops lol.
I actually prefer a taller antenna tuned correctly over a short one. The only reason I have a short antenna on my roof now is because of clearance issues. And I dont like hood mounts.

Eta: it was a Comet nmo mount that got ripped out of the roof. Hated that thing so no big loss.

And looked at my truck, it's a Tram on there now.

I like the bigger antennas also .. .. yrs ago when in lived in SC .. on a dare .. i took down my 16 foot tall shakespear CB antenna 16 foot tall .. mounted it on the 10 speed bicycle rear axle .. had a old 23 chan cb on it and motor cycle battery .. was hitting traffic lights and wires .. on the way to jam a friends base station lol good thing it was a all fiberglass antenna lol

made it to his front lawn .. keyed up .. can you here me now lol .. omg the crap i did back then ..

but if you have the room .. i would go with the 5/8th wave ones .. you get a bit more power gain .. stick on the car trunk or pickup bumper ..

Simplex which is your radio to another radio in our terrain of mountains and trees = 1 mile to 2 miles. Sometimes less if a mountain is between you and the other radio.

In the desert where everything is relatively flat = 3 to 5 miles. More depending on the terrain. Less if structures are in the way.

With a repeater which is your radio to a repeater and a repeater to the other radio it could be around 30 or so plus miles depending on the terrain.

These numbers are an estimate. They can be a lot more or a lot less. It all depends on the terrain and how high you are and how high is your antenna. You can get 50 plus miles simplex if you are in one mountaintop and the other radio is at another mountaintop.

For antennas especially NMO mounts for vehicles, I would pick Larsen or Laird. They're proven, quality gear and not much more expensive than the Chinesium Tram/Browning stuff.

I prefer NMO mounts but most are too worried about the hole they have to cut in the roof lol. Can't imagine why
