What am I even looking at here? I see that somone shot a .300 BLK out of their 5.56 gun but am I looking at the actual rim or did the bolt face get engraved?
Engraved on bolt face lol. Rest of the gun didn't look so good.

Yeah, if you have both you need to be very careful about ammo storage.
Not that I am tempting fate but it would seem that you would notice the size difference in the bullet, no?

According to the story, this guy let a friend borrow it who blew it up. Supposedly the mag was loaded with all 556, and 1 300 mixed in. Yeah, you would think you would notice, but accidents happen I suppose. Hell surely not make that mistake again. On top of it, the guy has to pay his friend for a new gun.

If you are shooting both 5.56 and 300 BLK from pre loaded magazines I think it would be easy to have a lapse of scrutiny and mix them up.
Most people use different colored mags. Yes it could be easy if not paying attention.
That could still be a problem if you absentmindedly loaded your 5.56 mags with 300 BLK, then you would get caught out in the range unless your were paying extremely close attention.
And here's what caused this if you didn't visit the arfcom site.
"My friend says he doesn't own a .300 and doesn't know how the round got into his magazine. He buys his ammofrom a commercial reloader, so either they screwed up and a round of .300 got into his .223 box, or he was loading from a collection of loose ammo into which a round of 300 got picked up off the ground and dumped in.
He had his wife loading mags, and she obviously didn't notice.
The solution is pretty simple but it will require strict adherence: 1) Pay attention to every round you put into a mag 2) Pay attention to the mag you are putting in the gun (different color mags will help here) 3) Don't load from a mixed bag of range pick-ups or leftovers."

It amazes me to see people pick up random loose rounds from the ground/floor of a range and save them. I can see scavenging spent brass, but for me once a round is dropped its dead to me. Not worth the $.50 round to put in my $700+ pistol or $1200+ rifle. Some people can be penny wise pound foolish
