Could someone of taken a 357 barrel and cylinder and put them in a model 18 frame ?

As @Phauxtoe stated, Gently (dont mar them) take the grips off when you can and check the frame under the grips for the model number stamping.

I believe the 18 frame was made for .22 only. If so, that would be one hell of a show when you pull the trigger. Not sure the frame could handle it.

Yes it wouldn't be safe unless you knew that smith used the same steel in the frames. If the frame does indeed say 18 and the barrel 357 it may not be safe. We already may suspect the front sight isn't correct, was there other modifications.
You guys are killing me. Your making me want to drive there after work one night and dig into this thing.

Maybe it's a model 28, with a weakly stamped 2. Or maybe the 2 is overstruck on the 1.
I know I promised these picture a long time ago but I finally got to it. On a good note thanks to everyone's help in this thread I successfully found a holster for the gun. I helped my father adjust it today and he really liked it. Hopefully this means he will shoot it more often. Sorry about the picture quality my phone didn't want to take good pictures.

The dash number is just a notification of a modification or revision to a current production model. In your case the -3 indicates the relocation of the rear sight leaf screw.
All very interesting. I didn't grab the serial number when I was there. I'll try to remember next time I'm there.
