Whats the deal with blocking a mag?

I just bought a M1 carbine USGI. I hear that the 10 round mags are kinda crappy but the 15 round stock mags are good to go. I see there is a company that makes blocks for them. Is there some kind of "permanence" clause to modifying mags?

Can’t be undone. Rivet or epoxy or something. You can buy 15 rounders that are pinned.

Whatever "readily" means is up to interpretation.

When you buy any commercially available blocked mag they come either riveted or sealed with epoxy. I would do the same if I did one myself.

"Readily restored" is the terms used in the magazine restrictions. Cannot accept more than 10 or be readily restored to accept more than 10. What readily restored means is not defined.

Only legal way to do it I suppose is to have them sent to an FFL who will do the work. (but good luck getting anyone to send them to NY to begin with).

Or drive to another state, purchase them in person at a shop, and install the blocking device before you come back across the imaginary line.

I put the mag blocks in it but the floor play back on and don’t worry about it. I use US G.I. Mags. Floor plates are not as easy to remove. I never worried about it. I try to put Ammo in there and only takes 10 that’s all I do. This was before I receive my FFL. Your mileage may vary. Do what you’re comfortable with.

If it doesn’t accept more than 10 I doubt anybody will fuck with you. Proceed at your own risk.

These would be real USGI mags which would be C&R. I think you can just order those because if you have a registered C&R gun you can register the mags to the gun. I'm not positive though.

I'll probably just try to find some 10 rounders and hope they work instead of messing around. This state really puts a damper on things :-(

They will likely want them pinned in place. I bought some of thier products and I think they sent epoxy right with in and told me to epoxy them and still would not gaurantee they are legal.

If I ever did such a thing I would epoxy the limiter to the follower only just for show. Then I'd purchase another follower as a spare for my 10 rounders.

If caught, when they open it the follower and limiter would be one piece. It would show intent that I'm trying to follow the law. If asked why the baseplate isn't epoxied, then I would say, "How else would I clean and service the magazine if it jammed and needed a spring replaced?"

I am going to look for some mag blocks on a 3D printer site, it should be something where I could print what is needed right at home. Then I could print whatever blocks I needed and bring them with me if I ever go to PA or NH to buy a full size magazine. Maybe more work then necessary but I am having fun playing with a new 3D printer. On a side note --- Is it legal to possess a 20 or 30 round magazine which is completely disassembled - so you "only have parts".

The safest bet is this. Keep these in your toolbox for an AR. For your Glocks, they have similar 5 round extension options. This way they can't say you modified anything and when the need arises, in 3 minutes, you have extra capacity.

You agree, but If you're concerned about DA interpretation, then that idea you have might come to bite you. If you had one of those extensions, you have the ability to convert that 10 round magazine into a high capacity ammunition feeding device now. Why will they never see the extensions if the DA says that component can be used to, in their opinion, "readily" convert the magazine into a high capacity one? I like the idea, but again it holds no further guarantee. The difference you have is you'll gladly be sold a 10/30 magazine or rifle with one without question in NY, but they're not going to sell you the 18 round extension with your purchase and probably not separately either.

Like people keep on saying, there are loads of factory 10 round magazines that will hold 11 rounds. People aren't freaking out about it, and if they did, the FFL's would be getting screwed as well.
