The reason I asked where they were is because in Afghanistan There were calls for the 7.62x51 because the distances were greater than the average distances for engagements in Iraq. In "normal" combat distances there is not much of a benefit for the average grunt to carry the x51. It has drawbacks of it's own (weight for example). When you are engaging targets across a valley or on a mountain side the x51 can make a big difference. As was pointed out earlier the biggest issue is fmj.

Bingo!

Proper shot placement on deer using 308 . The stopping power means everything if the deer decides to fires back .


556 vs deer

Looks like a full 12 seconds before deer goes down, For me, that is an unacceptable risk .

I know its not scientific , just trying to demonstrate the stopping power of the 308

If i can hit my target 10/10 times with a 22 but only 4/10times with 9m or 45, it makes sense to use the 22. Plenty of powerful rounds for it. A missed shot does you no good.

Your making that statement and you don't even know where they were shot. ( It was the chest ) A 308 would have dropped him instantly the 556 Ice picked right through him it took multiple shots to drop him . another surprisingly was at 150 yards the man was struck 5 times before he quit.

another thing was the lack of barrier penetration they mentioned. They were firing on insurgents that were behinds some cars and the insurgents bullets were penetrating the vehicle they were hiding behind but the 556 wasn't penetrating behind the vehicle where the insurgents were where .

I have first hand experience of this in Afghanistan. What you say here is all true.
One of the most common things you hear during a fire fight is, "did I get him???Did I fucking hit him??".
All to often you have no clue whos hit and the guy ends up with three hits but didnt even flinch. Then dies once he stops running. Adrenaline is a miraculous thing.

It depends on a number of factors for me.

What can I conceal? Deep concealment necessary? What risk assessments have I made? Two legged threat, or four legged? Winter or summer? Potentially from breathing distance or possibly shooting thru a barrier?

If I had to carry one handgun caliber it would be .357SIG in a 4" or longer barreled gun. My usual carry sidearm is 9mm. My compromise sidearm is .380
Sometimes I carry .45ACP, .45GAP or 10mm.

I like backup guns in the same caliber, and I really like reloads if carrying a semi gun.

I'll choose the 9mm or .40 because that is what I carry and practice to be proficient with. I do sometimes carry a BUG in .25acp but that is for a last resort only.
