Which 9mm should I get?

This is a generic question asked a million times online, but some specifics may help:
  • $400-700 budget
  • I don't anticipate/need to carry it
  • Needs to be reliable and work with cheap 115gr stuff
  • May eventually put an optic on it
  • Intend to use for target practice or in an alternate universe where I tinker with 3-gun
Since we're in NY, I don't need to worry about capacity (i.e. 1911 is at a disadvantage in other states because of this).

I have to admit Glock 34 is top of the list because if I don't really care about size, this seems to fit the bill of reliability, accuracy, lots of support. But it's also going to be at least $600.

My main issue is I don't really know what I want except I want a 9, so wondering if maybe a Glock 19, for example, is just a safer bet. Also does not at all have to be a glock.

Try a bunch and find out what feels best to you.
The G34 is essentially the same as a G17, except with a longer slide. It IS available in an optics-ready version that has a cut in the slide and mounting options available. In mu opinion, the only real advantage to the G19 is that it's smaller and better suited for carry. If you're not anticipating carrying it, you're probably better with the G17 or G34.

I have a G34, a G17, and a G19 (all 4th generation guns) if you want to try them all side by side.

I'm very happy with my Canik TP9SFX. Very accurate, can be had for under $500.00. Needed stronger ammo for break in , now it eats everything!

Ok so hear me out... get a Glock 19, later on if you really want a long slide for fun or what ever.. then get one of these (plus zldie and "xl" barrel)

If I don't plan on carrying I'm not sure why I wouldn't, although Edward's idea is not a bad one, but looks like it would be a couple hundred in parts to extend sight radius on a 19 if I went that route.

I have a CZ P-01 and highly recommend it, or any CZ for that matter. Nothing against Glock, but I prefer an all metal pistol over polymer. If you do not intend to ever carry it, go for a full size CZ SP-01 tactical. It's a great shooting gun and is popular with competition shooters.

I’d probably stick with these 3:
M&P9 with 5” barrel
Glock 34
Sig P320 full size

While Glock will give you the biggest aftermarket for parts and upgrades, you can’t go wrong with S&W or Sig. The modularity of the Sig has always appealed to me but I’m so attached to my M&P I can’t switch.

Love the CZs but they’re pricey.

I will say with your requirement of possibly adding an optic, a recommendation for Glock seems to float to the top. That doesn't mean there aren't other but this is the most common milling out there. I too dream about having a G34 for a range gun.

Get a grip Blimey!!!! Literally! You should go to a few gunshots and handle them to see what feels best to you. A quality gun that doesn't feel right won't give you the best performance. I think The Firing Pin in Bergen has guns you can try. Good luck and enjoy the search!!!

Looks like nobody is pushing for a 1911, so that will help narrow it a bit :)

They do. Thinking about taking a trip because I can at least fire a few down there.

Ugh, it looks like they upped the rental price for guns to $36/hour.

Gotcha. The Sig P320x5 is optic ready and can be found for low to mid $600's, the Canik TP9SFX is optic ready and relatively inexpensive. The PPQ Q5 match is just above your range. H&K just came out with the VP9 long slide but i don't remember if it's optic ready. Probably more than $700 anyway since its new. S&W has a few optic ready options as well. I'm not familiar with them all cuz all their different iterations confuse me.

Plenty of reasons for getting a 19 over a gun that is literally the same size but with less barrel. Especially for someone who says they dont plan to carry it and are leaning g34 size aka range gun and competition gun.

You would never in a million years see someone show up to a USPSA, IPSC, IDPA, steel match, 2 or 3 gun event with a G43x and try and compete unironically (unless we are talking about the micro classes but that would be against other 43s 43xs 26 type guns)

I hate toe agree with the masses bu if you want a 9mm in that price range get a Glock. Get a 19 gen 3 or 4.

Why?
1) Price
2) Anything over a 4" barrel is not really going to effect you accuracy
3) mods on the market
4) The frame size is comfortable for most hands size
5) you can swap the barrel out with a .40 and you have another caliber choice


If your price range was higher I would go with a 226 or CZ.

You would need a different slide as well (oh and a different ejector)

Now if @Blimey was to get a Glock 22/23/27 or 35. It would be just a simple conversion barrel to shoot 9mm or .357sig (and again ejector for 9mm) and turn those guns into 17/19/26 or 34 (for 9mm) or 31/32/33 sorry no long slide .357sig (but they do make barrels for the 35)
