Which Round Will Penetrate More in Soft Tissue?

I know heavy usually penetrates more in soft tissue (fur, muscle, bones) and fast penetrates more in harder objects (steel, tin, aluminum). But what if the speed was significantly faster (200 more fps)? Would it out penetrate the heavier slower bullet in soft tissue?

I'm torn between these two rounds.

Buffalo Bore Flat Nosed 124gr+P+ rated at 1300 fps

9mm Luger +P+ Pistol and Handgun Bullets Pistol and Handgun Bullets

Buffalo Bore Flat Nosed Hard Cast 147gr+P rated at 1100 fps

9MM +P OUTDOORSMAN Pistol and Handgun Bullets Pistol & Handgun Ammunition

Ok. Basically I want to stock up on HP's. I got those.

Now I want to stock up on quality Flat Nosed FMJ'S.

HP's for 2 leggers. And the Flat Noses for 4 leggers as well as the occasional frying pan. Lol

These will go in my Bug Out Bag with the 9mm Carbine.

I'm torn between the 2 only because the 147's don't gain much in a carbine like the lighter ones do. The 124's would be at over 1500 fps. The 147's would remain at about the same.

Weight over fps to penetrate bone soft tissue ect. Also less wear on the gun. +p+ is a bit much in my opinion. This from a pistol or carbine or both?

The 124gr then, the extra 400 fps would make a big difference. Um... so after you bag a frying pan..... how does one... prepare it?

Both. The Glock could take it. I have faith in the old gal. The Lone Wolf G9 shouldn't have an issue either.

I was thinking that too. It's a no brainer for the carbine. But will they be as effective in a 3.5 inch barrel for let's say a black bear? We already know the 147's can take out a Grizzly.

And the frying pan is best prepared garnished with whatever meat may be behind a car door.

Will I always go the heaviest bullet weight I can get my hands on. I'm old-school I believe mass creates distraction. I know we can get into big heavy debate here which I don't want to get into. Just telling you what I feel.
In the long run should God for bid you get caught up in an emergency like that unload the son of a bitch and make sure each one hits it's target.

The 147 is designed to penetrate 4-6 feet from a pistol. You saw what it did to the grizzly. The 124 from a glock 26 is not going to do that. Light bullet and heavy bone don't to well together. Just the carbine I would think 124 but I'm not sure if it would deform? Hard cast won't that I have seen.

I think that settles it then. 147's Hard Casts that have little chance of deforming for 4 legged furry meat that wants to kill me and 124 gr Federal HST for 2 leggers and car doors.

Hi.
The desired result has more to do with bullet construction and terminal design than weight or speed.
If you want penetration FMJ is a good bet. If you want even more penetration try a solid penetrator.
They are also ok in soft tissue but IMO too much of a liability for personal defense.
Is this for defense in the woods or personal defense?

I am asking because if this is for large predator threat then I feel 9mm is not the best choice.
I would resort to conventional wisdom on this matters.
I would step up to 200gr 10mm minimum. Or go dirty harry all the way.
It doesn't mean one cannot get lucky and pop a large bear but they are called hard to kill for a reason. Moose are very dangerous too.
To be honest I would prefer to be surprised by one with a 308w carbine with 180gr partition or a 250gr 35 whelen even better.
There is no recall button in real life. I never heard anyone complaining they killed something too fast but at the other hand
heard many complaints about "kept shooting and it would not come down" ... both bad hunting and bad defense choices.
Bears have taken two rounds of 300 WM point blank at 20 yards and never seen again. Most likely laid to die somewhere but just saying...

Meke, the flat pointed bullets are for woods carry. I already have some of the 147 gr Hard Casts and carry those in the woods. I just didn't like that they don't gain hardly any velocity from a longer carbine barrel.

I just figured the lighter 124gr bullets with way more velocity would penetrate more but after reading the responses here, they will probably deform and inhibit penetration if bone is hit since under the jacket they contain soft lead. I just got hooked on speed.

I know a bigger caliber is ideal but this is what will be in the one bug out bag. One caliber for both the carbine and pistol will have to make due to keep the weight down.

Everyone knows their own circumstances. However a few random thoughts in case anything applies.

The 147 hard cast is probably a good choice. Also check the underwood +P+ 147 FMJ.
For extreme penetration the underwood +P+ 115 extreme penetrator will probably give the most penetration no matter what media on the target.
I am saying underwood because they normally give at 100fps or more than other comparable +P offerings. buffalo bore are super hot too.
Most 9mm loads will slow down after 12-14 inches so a 16" barrel will not benefit. not enough powder. A shorter barrel (with an extension if needed by law) will do more speed.
Many bullets will penetrate less at higher speeds specially if they hit bone or like hollow points they will make a wider stretch cavity but less penetration. They either fragment or end up
wider slugs.
In a SHTF backpack scenario I would consider a 10" pistol barrel that I can put on my backpack and if I want, a light "Wrist support" than effectively can be used as a stock. We also have
pretty light sights and moutns.
The glock is great for this but there are otehrs. With these options available there is no need to carry a carbine for a 9mm, as effectively, I can do the same by using add ons.
The weight savings will be welcome or translated into extra ammo.
Additional benefit is to keep the same frame as the carry pistols assuring ex-changeability of parts or avoid having to carry two firearms in the first place.
