Ahh, evil assault weapon! :OI have a few 10/22s and they're great but certainly wouldn't rate them as "the best". Look at Volquartsen VF-ORYX as an example of something better. Of course, it carry's a price tag to match lol...

Even in S. Dakota? It can be built to be NY compliant if wanted but point was there are better guns out there than a 10/22...

I'm partial to my Remington 597 heavy barrel. The 597's have a super smooth action with dual guide rods and springs. They have last round bolt hold open and there is no awkward toggle to depress to close the bolt. You simply sling shot it.
They did have issues with their extractors and early magazines, but those issues have largely been addressed. Either by the factory or with aftermarket parts.
Before I even shot mine, I installed a Volquartsen extractor.
I have also upgraded the trigger and hammer.
My only issue now, is the spring that holds the charging handle into the bolt seems to have fatigued and allows it to be pulled out too easily. I haven't figured out a fix yet.
(Not my gun, but this is what it looks like)

Got curious with this thread and did a search for .22 semi-auto rimfires that come dressed in wood and blue steel.
Winchester, Remington, Marlin, Mossberg all a no go at this time with zero offerings. Browning has some but they are definitely of an odd styling, CZ also has one to offer, and Savage with nearly a hundred offerings in .22 models makes a few in semi with choice of classic walnut or laminate stocks. I'm sure I missed a few but pickings are slim unless you go plastic these days.
This Savage caught my attention though.

I have a pair of old Mossberg autoloaders. Without going to look, I believe they are model 152's. One is as original as it was sold, and belonged to my Fathers' Great Uncle. The other I bought and did a little work to. Aside from having it drilled and tapped for bases and having it re-crowned, all I did was replace a few springs and the firing pin. This gun absolutely shoots one hole groups at 50 yards with the right ammo. Even with inferior ammo it will shoot dimes at 50 yards. The fact that I have the Hubble mounted on it probably helps. The relatively heavy barrel gives it a nice balance.

I wonder if that price is a reflection of the times or if it has always been that high? Reminton did offer the 597 in a laminate stock at one point. I went with a Marlin 795 when I decided to pick up a .22LR rifle. It's the same barrel and action as the Marlin model 60 except it has 10 round box magazines instead of a tube magazine. It was lighter and less expensive than a 10/22. It's been very reliable and accurate. A plus is that it comes with the sling mount holes molded into the stock.
I did bring it to an Appleseed event last year with Uncle Mike's swivel sling mounts, a GI web sling and Tech sights and it performed fantastic even if I didn't.
It's lighter weight was a big advantage during the standing shooting.

One thing to keep in mind at this time is that both Remington and Marlin are not in production. Ruger just started bring back the Marlin lever guns and there is no telling what if and of the Rimfire line is coming back?
