Eagleridge ridge has a very valid point though. You do lose some credibility when you complain about issues unique to NY gun owners when you voluntarily choose to remain here AND have no intention of ever leaving. NY is bad state to live in for far more than just guns (cost of living, taxes, congestion, ugly geography, rude people, etc). I don't think there are too many careers out there that are both irreplaceable elsewhere and worth sacrificing all this for.

Do you really think they are willing to go through that much work to literally track every person down who doesn't electronically update their permits (all because of some bullet point on a bill that was rushed through legislature a few years ago)? If so, I am very disappointed that this is where our tax money is going. Especially since I would estimate only about half of all handgun owners in this state will likely "renew" their permits by the deadline.

Of course they are, it’s the gov’t, they have unlimited resources when they need to. People think they’re going to put a damper on paperwork by filing at the last day. So what, the state will just muddle through until everything I s updated.
Meanwhile, the law stays, you get stuck with crappy looking guns, low round mags and 5year renewals.
Maybe even a ammo database.

It's not that easy when you are invested in a career that doesn't transfer anywhere else. If I worked at AutoZone as a clerk making a few bucks an hour, you'd have a point. But that isn't the case. Not everyone is 60 years old and retired either.

I have an idea how this may be enforced.

It has already been stated to the county clerks that, once the recertification period (whatever that is) is over, the NYSP will send a list of those people who did comply to the various county clerks. I think the simplest way for the clerks to deal with this would be to go down the list and pull the file of everyone on the list. And then flag that file as "recertified".

Then, if someone goes in to add an amendment, replace a damaged permit, whatever and their file is pulled, as it normally is, it will be immediately evident whether or not that person complied with the recertification requirement. And remember - the county clerk reports to the judge in matters of pistol permits. If the judge instructs the county clerk to report any failures to recertify that come to his or her attention the county clerk will be obligated to do so. What happens after that would be up to the judge.

I doubt the NYSP would be able to determine, based on records they currently have, who should have recertified and failed to do so. And I doubt the county clerks would go along with a wholesale review of their records to compare the list of recertifications the NYSP will provide to their paper files and look for non-compliance. That would be too time consuming and an unfunded mandate, which county clerks traditionally resist.

No, there may not be anyone sent out to confiscate guns. Just like the "assault weapon" arrests we have seen -- they won't go looking for violators but will pick them off one by one as they are discovered.

TAPPER3 is right. Present records don't and can't reflect who should have certified and failed to do so. Every permit ever issued is still on file, and counted in the totals, - unless a deceased permit holder's family or heir's notified the licensing office of their demise, - the permit is still listed. How many permit holders have died, and their firearms just were 'inherited' by others in the family, without proper registration,...no one knows. It will takes years for them to figure this one out, If they even attempt to try. No one sits at the permit office and checks the obituaries against pistol licensees every day.

I moved out of state over a year ago and I went to the county office and they let me keep my permit becuase I still own property in NY. I was told it's on a case by case basis and depends where in the state you live also ( different counties different rules) but I doubt they will let me renew my permit. Haven't even given it a thought

Yes. New York State will offer the status of any non recertification to FBI. FBI will gladly accept. NYS is doing this now. NYS attempted to use NICS for its own purpose, face to face ammo sales. Can’t do that.

Mostly for the people who are trying to sound hella bad ass by saying nope I'm not going to do it and the state will just be OK with that.

Why is that my favorite, because they are also the same people who are going around telling everyone that NYs is just microns away from kicking in doors and confiscating all guns that aren't muzzle loaders or some crazy tin foil hat shit.

So here we are you have these people talking about how NY is super anti gun (mostly true) and are doing everything the state can to take guns away from people. Then in almost the same breath say they don't need to fill out the recertification (or do it with in the actual time limit stated by law) because new york won't waste it's time and money confiscating all the now "illegally" possessed handguns

I tried to do mine on line yesterday and it wouldn't take my date of birth. I called the help line and the ahole that answered blew me off and told me to call the safe act people on Monday. I went to my daughter's to use her printer and I figured I would try on line again, It went through that time. What a pain in the ball bag. 10 hand guns co registered with my wife. There was a lot of swearing going on. I really wish I could leave this miserable state.
