Yeah, I know what you mean. When there is a massive Earthquake or other natural disaster we (USA) don't do anything.
We are just big bad bullies to some countries that want to kill us.
Next earthquake see how much aid Iran sends.
Who is the bully when we are in international waters.
These little piss pot countries in the middle east and I will throw Russia and China in the mix only understand and respect strength and the exploit weakness.
Those sailors are in Harms Way and that is why it is called Harms way protecting your lifestyle.
You want to drive your car or drive a team of horses. If you want the horses, you have grow the oats and shovel the road apples.

While Pearl Harbor was a sneak attack, our foreign policy was so pro-British and anti-Japan that it shouldn't have been a surprise. Why was it up to us to defend the British empire and their colonialism? We'll never know for sure but many people suspect that FDR provoked the Japanese to launch the war. Maybe WikiLeaks will find his emails? Had Lindbergh or any competent person been president we would have had lines of communication open to Japan and likely could have prevented the Pacific war altogether (who cares who runs China, it's not like Mao was better for the Chinese people or the USA).

Just think about the aftermath of WW2... Germany now controls the European economy and says what's what (not that Merkel does very well). And Japan has one of the richest, most advanced cultures ever. Who won here?

Heck we didn't even save the Jews from the gas chambers, as the Nazis didn't start massive extermination until we invaded Europe. They managed to kill however many million and now there are very few Jews in Germany. I'd say they Nazis accomplished their goal. In fact what goal didn't they accomplish? Which country is the most prosperous, high tech, healthiest?

Personally I think a government that can't run a welfare state or accomplish much of anything else can't run a war very well either. Name one government program that actually worked well and efficiently? I've gotta give props to the Apollo program but that is the single exception over 230 years, many trillions, and many lives wasted. We'd be a lot safer with guns in our homes, local militias, and a damn good volunteer Coast Guard.

Having been to many armpits of the world that I couldn't have cared less about I must say we are not the worlds bully. I don't see the Taliban or ISIS building schools for female children. I don't see India standing up to the abuse and disfiguring acid attacks on their female population of their country.

Have not seen the Mexican government stop the mass slaughter in their country. I have not seen one Arab country try to stop the raping of male children that cannot grow facial hair yet. I have not seen the Columbian government or any African government try to stop human traffickers or trafficking.

I did not see anyone stop the ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia before we got there. When I crossed the Sava River into Bosnia the first town I saw had one wall of one building still standing and there was a huge hole blown in it. When I left through the same town 7 months later the town was almost completely rebuilt and kids were playing in the school yard.

Sorry not buying or wearing the bully label.

I understand when people want us to "butt out" of the rest of the world, and there are times we could. However, we need to remain the big kid on the block because if we dont, simple human nature,will have russia or china stealing our allies, and pushing us out of the way.

Its naive to think we can not be involved in the affairs of the world and maintain our "way of life".

I admire our soldiers' service and bravery but I think we should learn our lesson that you can't impose freedom or our way of life on other countries. Unless the citizens are fighting for their own freedom, it's pointless as the whole enterprise just collapses back onto itself... i.e. Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and most every other Hellhole we wasted lives and money on.

What the military should do is march on Washington and round up the Clintons and their ilk, run a fast tribunal and line up the firing squad.

Frankly, as I said in my post above, there are plenty of circumstances that we do not need to be involved in. But unfortunately there are times that I think we do. That could be an entire thread by itself that could be massive.

I never want to see our soldiers lives wasted for unjust causes.

If we did things right the Coast Guard and Border Patrol would be more powerful than the traditional military. If everyone did national service after High School and got some basic training as well as physical labor rebuilding our infrastructure ~ then mustered out with some savings and a good rifle ~ then... well I could go on.

Ill save ya the trouble of Wiki leaks, Before Pearl harbor and Because of Japanese expansion, The US and Britain placed an oil embargo against Japan, and as we all know Japan has no oil it must ship it in. ( that in itself ,is an act of war) . The Japanese hand was forced. In order to obtain enough oil , they had to break the embargo, Anybody can tell you that. The attack has to come and they knew it would. And if you were the enemy commander where would be the best place to attack? Pearl harbor. The American government practically planned it out themselves. They it was commin they knew where it was coming and they broke the codes , so they even knew the approximate time , They would have know when the Japanese fleet set sail ,
