The true strength of the 5.56 is the sheer variety of loads available. I don't think anyone here will argue the effectiveness of the various "barrier blind" loads or of the various OTM loads. When we start looking at the higher end stuff the argument becomes moot.

Were you using FMJ or soft points though? Those 154gr SPs Cabellas sells under the Herters brand, I'd bet those are a fair bit more effective than the standard 120ish gr FMJs. In fact I understand that such load is pushed to the same velocity levels as the lighter FMJs. That would make the 154gr the true equal of 150gr 30-30 loads wouldn't it? And I sure as hell wouldn't want to take a 30-30 hit.

123gn SP for the hog. My deer were with 123gn Hornady SST's. I prefer to stick with 123gn just so I don't have to re-zero.

I do plan to try deer with the .223 in 62gn SP again this season also. The few times I have taken that one out, I didn't get a shot.

The 545x39 isnt velocity dependent as the yawing is due to the actual bullet design. As far as extreme range it depends on how extreme. All bullets will not do what they are supposed to do if they go out far enough.

ETA: the 5.7 is definitely not useless. Look at what it can do!
