Why is Re-certification Even Needed?

I have been trying to understand why (other than it is another attempt to harass gun owners) is re-certification even needed? Assuming the only "legitimate" value in re-certification is to insure that people who should not have permits lose them, how does re-certification do that?

I assume that you fail re-certification if you can't pass a background check. However if you have bought a gun (handgun or rifle) in the previous 5 years, you had to pass a BC. Also, the County Clerk's office does a "Brady Check" every 5 years. Lastly, if you are involved in some court action that the judge has your guns confiscated and your permit revoked, this goes into the BC system and you can't buy a gun. So it seems like there already is a process to verify you qualify to keep your permit.

So is there any real value to the re-certification? I think not.

I don't think it's enough to just be an NRA member anymore. We need to be more active politically in explaining to the middle of the road, reasonable people, who may be defaulting to voting dem just out of habit.

Agreed that disarmament is likely the goal. Regardless of whether that's true or not, I think anti-firearms laws should have to show significant, repeatably tested and true, evidence that anti-firearms laws have actually helped decrease crime rate. If they're unable to show it, they should be invalidated immediately.

I'd LOVE to see a law that proposes these conditions on laws in general that are restrictive, so that ineffectively and unnecessarily restrictive laws will just disappear.

The HUGE problem here is they keep making new criteria for "who shouldnt be allowed to possess them".
A mental health and prescription thing is going to screw alot of people. Legislators have actually said that an Ambian prescription should make you unable to own guns. How about off label uses for anti depressant drugs or anxiety meds?
They ARE absolutely 100% out to limit the number of people who are eligible to own firearms...so....infact they do want to take peoples guns away.

First, I don't think it's a massive conspiracy -- but I do think some people genuinely may want to disarm gun owners.

Second, even if it wasn't an effort to disarm honest owners, which is totally reasonable to assume, then it still presents the problem that many of these laws disarm more lawful, law abiding owners, then they do to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals or dangerous people. A great deal of refinement is needed, if not a complete and competent rewrite of laws.

I wear a pretty tight tinfoil hat but some of you guys are really out there. The 3rd post explains why they want recertification. To clean up the system. Any logical person can come up with that conclusion. I'm not saying I agree with it but it's the most logical reason.

As far as "Are they coming for your guns?" goes.... Yes. They are. But not in the paranoid delusion some of you guys are envisioning. Half a million cops (only in the state of NY) are not going to go by a master list and go door to door with flashbangs and attack dogs on the whim of the governor while the rest of the country watches and goes about it's business.

What they will do however is wait for you to fuck up in their eyes. Whether it be beating your wife, taking drugs (both illegal and prescription), or what have you.
