I've owned plenty of high end rifles and 50Bmgs are my favorite, so I acquired some 50 cal pistolas.
First was a custom S&W 500 and then this Stainless Guncrafter 50GI 1911. I had it for a couple of years and traded it for a thermal scope.
Was it worth $4k+ for a custom 50 cal 1911 that you won't see anywhere else and I had to wait a year to have made, hell yeah, but I traded it because I was tired of scrounging for the brass at the range and as with most metal guns I have, I got tired of lugging it around.
While the machining and function were impeccable, I paid for the 50 cal chambering.
I've shot some high end 45acp 1911's and I wasn't impressed with most of them.
Most people pay for the name on the slide and overpriced extras that can be purchased and installed for half the cost.
The only custom I'd be interested in now, is a left hand 1911, but I don't think I'll be winning the lottery anytime soon !

Eddie has it right. You carry a good but not too expensive gun (Glock...) because if you have to use it, the cops are going to take it away for a long vacation. Or something.
You can get a nicer 1911 with a forged frame, ramped barrel, better trigger and sights when you shoot for pleasure and competition. A $750 Springfield Range Officer is a great gun and you can always upgrade parts as needed.
I spent the $$$$ on a custom 2011 that looks pretty plain but the money is in the hours of hand fitting the builder did. There is no break in and there is little wear because everything fits properly, there are no burrs or sharp spots to hang up and drag to cause parts to wear out and get sloppy. The lock up is tight and it shoots a lot tighter groups than the decent $1000 gun I had prior. I've got the best parts in it and have custom trigger and grip fitted to my hand. The slide is lightened and tri-topped but it is heavy, right at 49 oz. with more weight below the pivot point so recoil is easier to manage. Every magazine is tuned to fit and feed optimally. I know I can shoot 1000 rounds per month (and 5 rounds per second) forever with a gun like this, all that wears out are the springs. My usual routine is to scrub the slide, polish the feed ramp and chamber, and oil the moving parts... maybe an annual tear down. Two months in I've shot 4k rounds with zero failures.
Yeah you can spend even more money on a pimp gun and I agree that's bogus. There are also some custom builders who only do cosmetics and you don't get anything better internally. So you do your homework just like any other big purchase.
Come and shoot it and see for yourself before mocking something you don't know about? I shoot at the Firing Pin pretty regularly, let me know, bring some ammo or slip me some $.

It's got a metal grip on an STI frame with some different cuts and logo on the slide. It's plain Jane with good not fancy parts, the difference is the fitting. Otherwise it looks like a DVC.
Dan Wesson ain't custom though right? I thought their niche was very high quality production guns?

Thanks for all the advice. I'll be staying with my loosey goosey Colts and Springers. For me, they do everything I need and look good doing it.
I will NOT be getting a Glock, don't like em', they don't aim properly for me with that grip angle. Plus they're damn ugly.

Correct. Just over priced "regular" guns. They are nice. But not special. Just built as all pistols should be built.....correctly. Far too expensive for what you get.
Never handled one so I couldn't say. I'm thinking of getting a 1911 for a range toy. A Dan Wesson Valor was on the list of possibilities. Also was thinking of a Springfield Range Officer. I would want something very nice for less than $1800 and very traditional looking. No muzzle comps or mag wells, crazy cuts on the slide or such. GI appearance with range toy fit and finish basically.

Yes there are, but we are talking benifits vs cost, DW seems to be the middle ground where price, performance and quality merge. Anything after that quality may increase but performace doesn't in relation to the price.
how much does a Freedom Arms go for?
Knight hawk makes an incredible looking pistol with the highest quality fit I've ever felt. but it's not going to shoot $1500-2000 dollars better then my DW.
The prices to add bells and whistles for these race guns is rediculous and I don't consider myself cheap when it comes to purchases.

Save your cash IMO a hand fitted semi custom production gun will shoot as good as full custom EdBrown ect. If your looking for a race gun different story your at the mercy of upgrade prices.
I've shot Dan Wessons, Gold Cups, Kimber Customs they are all on par as far a accuracy, The best fit went to the Kimber GOLD USA but it was a Kimber employees pistol which may have made a difference when you know and work with guy who is fitting your pistol. Best trigger I've ever felt was on a Colt Gold Cup the trigger work had allot of TLC done by the owner and it's an older gun the trigger has had plenty of rounds to smooth out. Out of the box I'd buy my DW again. If I ever sell it, it will be replaced it with another DW.

Yeah I really have an eye on a DA Valor. I hear nothing but good things, outside of maybe, maybe not being touchy during the break in. I also understand that the parts, while batch produced, are handfitted. Plus I like those Heine straight 8 sights, I wanna put a pair on my Shield

The Dan Wesson Valor and Vbob are their top-o-dee-line. Forged frame and slide. No MIM parts. Top quality components. Hand fitted. Google 'review wesson valor'. They don't look gaudy like so many 1911s these days... giant lettering and such. Excellent customer service. Beautiful craftsmanship, half the price of a wilson or brown.
