I wouldnt say a lab is "useless" as a watch dog.Although not known for being fierce,most dogs will be territorial and bark at a real intruder,especially females.I've got a pair of coonhounds,one of each,male,female.Neither are aggressive at all,until a stranger gets too close,the female loses her mind and sounds off like she's gonna kill someone,the male goes right to the door and snarls til she stops or I stop them both.Meth heads are scared of everything,and barking snarling dogs make them twitch.

Not really true. I saw a film about dogs and intruders. It basically showed most dogs do not attack or bite. Then send a gun in a house and he roughed up the owner etc etc and most dogs did nothing.

Remember, most dogs are pets trained to be NICE.

And the ones that aren't are a bigger liability than is worth.
That said I'd not really want to test the above statement on a German Shepherd.
A Doberman? Never met one that wasn't a total sweetheart. Most every Rottweiler I've met was a big goof. Boxers too. Boxers might be the biggest clowns in the canine kingdom actually.
German Shepherds though? If they don't know you the gives a shit about you.

When my kids were young we had a lab for 14 yrs.She didnt let anybody near my wife or kids when any of them walked her.Could she back up her barking and growling?Probably not,but most people back away from a barking,snarling dog.

That's not really acceptable behavior for a Lab though. Last thing I'd want for my faithful canine friend is for him to bite someone.

You cant "fake" a home invasion to a dog.You can have a stranger come thru the window but if the dog doesnt sense a real threat they wont react the same as a real threat.Of course its different with a trained attack dog,I'm talking about a family pet.The barking is just a deterant,no security system is fool proof.My hounds are the biggest clowns I've ever seen,but the Jehovas never even come close enough to knock.

Never acted that way when I walked her,and she was my dog,I fed her and walked her most of the time.She was just very protective of them when I wasnt around.They had no problem controlling her she just didnt want strangers to get too close.Exactly the kind of behavior you want from a loyal dog.In 14 yrs she never bit anybody.

My Black Danes while children friendly will chew you up at the first sign real of aggression on your part.. [Wife trained Both. She obedience and water rescue trained Newfies] Both will turn on with A 2 word command, and turn off with [ not telling you] They will protect any child with out a command on our property by laying down next to them or Ripping your arm or leg off. And above all They Protect My Wife. ZEUS and Lady Z have been tested and Proven . And At night they do NOT wear collars. Now My little guy has more balls than brains . Great watch dog.
See now once Chopper hears you, he sets off the Danes. The cameras record you. The yard flood lights kick in. They give us enough time to "lets say" get ready." First we break out the GSW med kit [ we are both EMTs.] Next We pray to never use our training, Because Mr T , IZH, and the Black Stick will do what ever we ask them to. I pray to all the Gods that don't have to protect my Family and any other members that seek shelter. May you all be safe.
