Years ago I use to hunt them with a friend that had a 220 Swift, I was shooting a Remington 700 in 222. If they were a hundred yards or less I shot them. If they were over a hundred yards he shot them. We were reloading then and were good hitting our mark.We had a lot of fun shooting them.He had a spotting scope so the other one could see what happened.

Fifteen years later I use to take my sons out for them with a Ruger 77-22/250 with a redfield 6X18 power scope, they killed their fair share of them. I gave that gun to my oldest son and bought another for mt second son.
Now I need to get me another 77 22/250.

I was back a few years ago riding around with my oldest son and he popped one over in Damacus with his Ruger Single-Six 22lr.

I have a Marlin 17HMR, I need to get a Ruger 77 in 17 Hornet.

The Ruger 204 would be another great woodchuck caliber as well.


The 17HMR or the 17 Hornet would make a GREAT WOODCHUCK GUN!

It does a lot more damage then the 22 Magnum with the same tip used.

GP100

What GPs do you have?
I see they make it in 22lr now. I('d like to get one as well as the SP101 in 22lr.

I have a stainless 6" 357 and a stainless 4" in 327 Federal magnum.

The 357 GP100 is by far my favorite centerfire handgun. I have the white plastic front sight on it and love it, I need to get one for my 327 GP100.

I unfortunately only have a 4" 357 Magnum. I almost bought the 6 but decided on the 4...the 3 inch is very cool also. I have always wanted a 3 inch SP101 and I also want a ruger LCRX now with the shorter barrel...bad lol.

The GP is great. Mine is just all stock expect I have bright green nail polish on the front site which helps a ton. Pondered getting the fiber optic though. I also have two speed strips and speed loaders with it .

I love the speed strips, I have Bianchi. I also had thin canvas speed strips pouches made up for them.
The speed loaders are way to bulky to carry and a pain in the ass to carry like a Ruger 10/22 magazine.

It the SP101 i have two of them a 327 Federal Magnum and a 9mm.
The 9mm is a pain in the ass to shoot with the stupid ass moon clips so it never gets shot.
The 327 on the other hand is a great little gun. I can shoot 32 H&R Magnum, 32 Long or 32 Short as well as 327 Federal Magnum.

Notice the black & white front sights, the white is SOOOO MUCH BETTER.

My brother in law popped one with a 17HMR at about 10yds and it never even exited the chuck. We could barely find an entrance hole either. It was the strangest thing I've ever seen.

This thread brings back fond memories of the Enfield I had in .303 British. We were made for each other, LOL. That thing would turn the pigs inside out. Never needed a second shot. But we're going back to the days when I was very good with iron sights. Now I'd be missing them with that rifle. Hopefully someone else is having fun with it still.

@Carlos - it also brings back grateful memories of the uncle who first took me out looking for woodchucks and other game. I wouldn't be hunting today if it weren't for him. RIP

That is pretty cool I need something like that. I don't ccw carry my GP because it's too big that is why I want the LCRx. I bring my GP hunting and wear it around the house usually in a cheap holster belt holster from bass or but it's held up good. The large black rubber houge grip is bulky.

I'm having more of them made up if the woman making them gets to it. When I get them I'll let you know.

They make them speed strips for 22 caliber, 32 caliber 38/357, 44/45 caliber.

I need to buy some 22 caliber and 32 caliber speed strips and then get pouches made up for them.

I do have 44/45 caliber pouches that I use occasionally and I had a neat one made up for 45 colt and 410 shotgun for my Bond Derringer.

Got tire of playing tag and let him have my 6.5 Swed. Scared the life out of my neighbors, live in a park at the time lol. When I checked him out there were a bunch of healing holes in him.

There's been a couple chucks out back I've been seeing. Finally today one of them stood up and gave me a target.
Savage Axis 22-250 and Hornady 55g Vmax @ 350yds. Tag, you're it

I'm pretty well convinced that 22-250 is the perfect chuck round. I'm partial to 45gr silver Winchester ballistic tips through it, myself.

Legally, you can. Ethics are a whole different argument.

I did take a boar with it a few years ago. There are certainly better calibers for the job, despite the fact that it'll do the job.

Ya true. 7mm-08 is my "dream" deer caliber. Currently use a 30-06...might try the .357 magnum lever gun this year too.

Those little 55g pills aren't much, but as they say, speed kills lol. Almost 4000fps. I wouldn't hesitate to take a doe with mine only due to the fact that shot placement with it isn't an issue. I'll headshot all day. I won't go for a heart/lung shot though. I've never found any remains from any of the projectiles but I'm sure they're just fragments.

Calling for rain tomorrow so it looks like the Chucky's bride will survive for another day.

I love this little round, the sound alone brings a smile to my face. I haven't tried anything other than the 55g Vmax so far. I'd like to get another press and start experimenting with loads.

How heavy of a pill can you load in a 22-250? I am thinking maybe a 55 gr Barnes TSX or 63 gr Sierra GameKing would be good for anything more than varmits.

Hopefully it is nice soon and you can get chucks bride. Lol

I think the weight would definitely help some with light wind, I don't think a 7g difference would be enough benefit for larger game. From yotes, the next game I can see using it on would be a deer, head shot would still be fine but I'd still shy away from a chest shot. Bullet design will definitely help, but I don't think you can get past the limiting lack of weight. But Met would be just the guy to know more about bullet design and ballistics. I just squeeze the trigger lol.

The way I see it in my mind is even if you had a steel core, with little weight it will tend to deflect hitting a rib whereas a heavier bullet is less likely to do so. All physics.

The funny thing is Chucky was actually a bit farther away than I realized when I took the shot, had it been a slower moving round he probably would have ran some. The shot hit about 5" lower than I expected, gut shot. I think the impact blew his lungs and heart apart, he didn't move a bit. Dead is dead lol.

I think the little 45gr pills are touted as having a4300fps muzzle velocity. They're FAST, and because they're so light, they fly really flat as well.

45gr bullets run about 4 grand, 40gr bullets run about 4300

I took one with a 223 it didn't go any where. But that's a fast hard hitting bullet on something so small.

Got 7 last year 22 LR HP pistol 10 feet away head area. Now I'm ground free loved shooting them, had a regular family for the last 3 years always keeping my eye out for them. Never used more than 2 bullets per critter
