While it would be bad no doubt, I don't think it would be quite that bad. Nuclear doctrine is to airburst smaller yield weapons over the targets, not wasting the destructive energy making a hole in the ground. Generally between 500 to 1000 feet above ground. The blast radius is not as large as you think either. The EMP triggered by the detonation will have an effect farther reaching than the blast and heat.Realistically, I think people underestimate the power of a single nuclear explosion. A ground hit would send a super sonic shock wave powerful enough to kill everyone at least 5 miles away from the core explosion instantly. By the time you see the flash, you're going to be dusted away like a feather in a supernova. Our nuclear weapons today are at least known to be something like 96% more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima. Shock waves don't stop on the surface of the earth either, they travel in every direction, including straight down. The site of an explosion will send heat well exceeding that of the surface of the sun all around the blast radius at super sonic speeds too. Things would vaporize, remnants of things man was not able to incinerate, would be turned to a crisp, maybe left over. You have to ask yourself, would you WANT to survive a world of highly toxic radiation that will outlast your food supply and your average life expectancy for many many years? In a war scenario where nuclear bombs are being exchanged back and forth, things are multiplied by the thousands. If the shock waves didn't unsettle and collapse the integral support of your super special impenetrable underground bunker and bury you alive, like it would to parts of the earths crust triggering earthquakes and probably volcanoes too, you'll be the only living being left on the planet. If you made it out alive, you'd be left in a nuclear winter storm filled with unbreathable air and toxic radiation, floating microscopic crystals and glass, Highly toxic gas like sulfur dioxide and sulfuric acid raining down that is certain to kill you for thousands of miles in every direction you are in. No animal or insect protein left. Not way to generate photosynthesis, etc. Not to mention radiation that will sizzle your skin causing extreme cases of cancer and other cellular mutational changes you probably don't want. It's getting late, I'm going to bed....
