Yes, you CAN load a full 30 round mag on a closed bolt

so, i cant find the thread where the topic came up.....basically people only put 28 rounds in their mags. personally i think this is stupid.

some say that 30 round mags that have 30 rounds in them will not load in a closed bolt rifle. all my mags, in all my guns load and function with 30 in a mag.

i forgot my pmags. sorry. but just take my word for it that they also work.

i made a video using a milspec lower and a scar 16 (i know i am a dumbass and called it a scar17 in the video... ) i used a usgi mag and a lancer mag. both full every time.

i started with one round in the mag so you can see it functions as it should.

the moral of the story is if your firearm will not load a loaded 30 round mag it is broken, or your are using your snowflake muscles.

If I had a 30 rd magazine, I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue to load the full magazine with the bolt closed. I would also claim to never have had that issue before if I had a 30 rd magazine.

I could seat fully loaded 30 round mags and I could manually chamber the first round, but after it fired it, there was so much pressure on the remaining rounds that it defeated the buffer spring's ability to strip the next round off. What are you talking about? I just made a video for those that say it wont work....this includes you.

Clearly it works. With video proof. So if your rifle does not work then it is broken.

I've only had this issue with cheap magazines, magazines which gave me trouble no matter how many rounds I loaded into them. Any serviceable magazine loaded into a rifle with no mechanical issues should work loaded to its capacity. If not, you have a problem somewhere that needs to be fixed.

I've actually seen the problem on a standard issued Colt with standard issued GI mags.

It could be that the magazines were old and beat up as most GI mags are. Many of us would strip one round out to prevent such issues.

Well what is the most likely culprit if a 30 rd mag won't load properly? Is it the mag itself or is it something else (hammer spring too stiff, bolt catch, etc)?

I have a whole bucket of 30rd mags (mainly PMAG) that I can load fully and insert into any of my rifles with closed bolts.

The only magazines I have an issue with is all of my IWI magazines... Now it's not a fully loaded issue, they barely fit unloaded they actually don't fit without fighting. So if anyone wants some super cheap 30rd mags lol

I don't recall anyone saying that it was not possible, only that it is possible that under stress it may not seat all the way so many people only load 28 rounds for this reason. Iirc, the marine corp teaches this method.

Im sure that 99% of the time its no problem, but it sure would suck to have a mag fall out in a gun fight.

I know when I was in it was a personal preference on what you did. I was air wing so it might not be a fair assessment. I would mark my mags and when I went to the range I would fully load them and make sure they would seat. I did find a few that wouldn't. These mags got red tape and were carried in the final grab positions also only loaded to 29 rounds. If I was a ground pounder I would have request new mags for the ones that didn't work as intended.

Well I run 7 to 10,000 rounds a year through various rifles. With magazines loaded to 30. I attend competitions all the time. None of my mags failed for the above reasons.

And, most of my mags are the pre-ban variety so their old. I do have new springs and followers.

In my non expert opinion I think it's a mag issue. I don't know if its worn spring/follower or worn body or what, but I have seen it be an issue. To me it's kind of a non issue because you should test your mags before using them in hostile situation. This goes beyond 30 rounders but applies for any magazine. If they fail to function you should either diagnose the problem and fix it or chuck the mag and buy a new one. Once again in my non expert opinion a lot of this stems from the increase of manufactures, therefore people are buying cheap ones and they are failing to preform. Being cheap is good until your life depends on it.

I started shooting M-16's nearly thirty years ago. These are guns that get abused. I loaded GI mags, again, these were always put thru hell. Never see maintenance. When we were done using them, they got tossed into foot lockers. We ALWAYS loaded 30 rounds into them. Almost never did we have an issue.

I own all different types of 30 round mags now, again, I fill them up. Never an issue. I have a wide variety of manufactures. When I say I have never had an issue, I mean never.

I also should add. Non frontline Marines get some really old crappy gear. I was issued stuff from Vietnam Era. So there's no doubt the magazines I was issued were worn way past their service life.

As far as doctrine in the military goes, there is none. It depends on the squad leader or the individual. Some don't even know it's an issue.

I will admit though that it takes more effort to seat that fully loaded 30 rounder on a closed bolt than 28 or 29.

For this reason alone, to me it makes sense to download. If your motor skills are compromised for whatever reason (IE injuries, adrenaline dump, lack of attentiveness, nervousness, ect), It will still be easier to seat a downloaded magazine no matter who you are. It's physics.

This is very true when you are loading for real compared to a day shooting at paper and pumpkins.

Its good to see BG do ths test, and he certainly shoots enough. I recall this being a topic of debate for many years with detracters thinking people are crazy for downloading, and downloaders saying better safe than sorry for only 2 rounds out of 30. I never thought much about it and just ran 28. Maybe ill start running 30 just to see myself (when im in a free state of course, otherwise all mags only hold 10 )

Its cerainly not something that i preached like religon, it was just a personal practice.

Overseas we always fully loaded and if I recall correctly, that was ordered due to ammo accountability. We weren't even allowed to have an extra for the chamber like we all do in civilian life.
