Zombie Threads

With the one year anniversary approaching , Is the anything set up to lock down threads after a certain period of time?

I do go to the old site from time to time ( I know my BAD ) to read what's going on. Well some fairly new poster responded to a eight year old thread! This seems to happen a lot there!

This might be something to look into before it starts to happen here. Like maybe lock it after one year from the last post?

So a new guy who doesn't know better uses the search function, only old threads come up since new ones aren't really being created.

With that said, why do some people from this forum post there? Do you really miss that site so much?

And I will also post when my Gun Club is opening membership or is having a Hunter Ed class, as there are people from my area on there that are not on this site!

if nobody has posted in 60 days it is a dead thread. I wish I could lock the challenge threads there is no need to post in them a week after the results are posted.

Right. So you ask me via PM or start a new thread. Now a new guy cannot read that continuously.

On ARFCOM, there are threads years old in between posts. I've learned a lot from them. Had they been closed, it would be scattered all over the site and the flow destroyed.

There is a feature called unwatch thread. I do it all the time with the useless picture, food, and other crap threads.

Here's the thing. People give their opinions. I give mine. They don't like mine so they get angry. Even when facts are produced and they no longer are opinions.

There are many flawed people here who take things to heart. Many a person has gotten angry with me because they say bullet X is the best and I show them multiple videos showing X bullet failing.

To each their own. I don't care. I'm secure even if I'm proven wrong.

Exactly. Before I got my 9mm AR, I researched the hell out of it regarding ballistics, range, velocity, ECT. In those forums I read, there were post that were resurrected months and years later with additions and more back and forth that added to the discussion. People commented on how certain bullets performed compared to how they performed on older posts. It was a continuous flow of new information.

Had they been closed, there would be no more comparison of experiences regarding the older posts and many people wouldn't bother starting a new thread.

I see nothing wrong with revisiting old topics so long as something new is brought to that discussion. Say I bought a piece of gear discussed in a thread some months ago and I wanted to update it with my findings for example. Like in the Chest Rig/Battle Belt thread for example.

I don't see anything wrong with old threads. Willjr has a point with getting info from old threads. Plus sometimes when someone new comes to the site and comments years later, it brings new discussion with the old posters. For example the rave years ago could of been about how great hexmags were. Now a lot of people don't like them. The whole thread could take a complete turn. I've been looking back on old threads on ARF to get examples and ideas for my aero M5 308 build. Old threads do help, at least in my opinion. Because when people ask questions that have already been asked, people get pissed. I've been the noob getting yelled at to use the search feature. Many many many times. Just my 0.02

There's a bona fide reason why part of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is building content. This forum is more than just a means for you miscreants to gather and bash. Miscreants we don't know also look for info online via the search feature. Those deplorables are potential future members on our beloved forum.

Must keep building content through growth of membership but also through growth of the ideas contained within existing threads. Creating new threads to further conversation from closed threads totally breaks up continuity.

Keep the threads open!
