Lets say you want to place a DP where stakes won't work well (bedrock below 5 inches of soil). Do you carry extension cables/chain to secure the DP to a nearby tree?
You make the extension cables? All my dp's have cable extensions, I look them to trees. Very rarely do I use a stake on a DP.
Thanks for all the help man.Yup, 5/64 aircraft cable and just crimp ferrules to make a big loop on one end and small on the other. Small loop tethers on the trap chain swivel and big loop tethers the whole setup around a tree.
This is very helpful. Thank you for being so generous! No problem, I will try and run down a list of stuff from memory....
I use a jet sled ice fishing sled to haul stuff, I will pack it with a bucket with foothold traps for k9 sets, another bucket has some #1 foothold for mink pocket sets, spray bottles with coyote and fox urine, cable earth anchors (stakes), hatchet, wire, pliers, and thick rubber gloves. Also in the sled I usually throw some rebar stakes for water pocket sets or connibear stabilizer/stakes, and a few random connibear traps in for blind trail sets or water blind sets. I throw some dog proof traps in the sled as well as my lure bag. This bag has various lure, bait, small bottles of urine sometimes, pan screen covers, bag of sheep wool, bags of dry cat and dog food, sometimes mini marshmellows, sometimes bag of peat moss or dry dirt (right now dry dirt) and cloth gloves. Also a trapping trowel for digging pockets in the sled.
In my backpack is my sifter, 3 in 1 hammer, stake driver, bag of poly-fil (using that right now instead of pan covers), flake antifreeze, rubber coated cloth gloves, and some other bait/ lure occasionally. I will often strap a few mink and weasel boxes on the sled as well to toss out near creeks and what not. These boxes have traps in them already.
I think that is the normal pack in on an initial type haul to set out.
If I am checking I often just carry an old Remington 33 single shot rifle with a catch .22 ammo holder with some different types of .22's loaded up in it and a bit of rope or paracord and a head lamp. I have to check my line before work while it's still dark so I am usually on a time crunch to get done. I will go back and remake after work if I can squeeze it in or sometimes just bring what I need the next day to remake a set. Occasionally I can get to the truck and back out to remake quick.
If I have time and am running checks I will bring the sled with pretty much everything. I will thin the gear out if I am satisfied with the number of sets I have out (Not haul more traps out for no reason). Sometimes just the fox urine from that bucket goes into the backpack and that bucket of stuff also stays.
Kind of judge as I need and what seems to be happening.
Thank you for the kind offer. I may take you up on that! Not sure where you are from but if you are not far from me you, or anyone else who is interested, is more then welcome to come one day I am going to make sets.
Yes I am. Raccoon, fox, coyote. No problem, are you looking to get into it and start out?

Thanks man!Just wanted to bring this back up for anyone interested. I had previously pulled all my traps for a while because the weather along with time constraints. Unfortunately when it snows I have to plow at work so I get called in at crazy hours and don't have time to do my checks so I am forced to pull out....I was able to get 4 dirthole sets for k9 out today in 1 location along with a blind trail connibear like in the video. I should be able to keep up with these for a while as it won't take long to check the spot. I had a ton of yote and fox tracks in the area so I have high hopes for these sets.
I still want to get a video for you @freddy I haven't forgotten. My little guy went down for a nap and I had a spur of the moment chance from the old lady to get out and set these today. My gopro wasn't charged up so I couldn't get it today for you.
So you do not use extensions for coilspring traps? Please explain why not.I do not do anything to my cable stakes or rebar stakes. Dying does remove odor from traps but it is more of a rust preventative, waxing helps to seal and prevent rust especially when using antifreeze as well as slick them to fire better. I do not fret over my human odor on stakes as they are driven under ground and covered with ample dirt...as far as the extensions on dp's I do nothing, i haven't found coons to be bothered and usually are intrigued by shiny metal if anything.
I just go by memory, if I ever expand I may try an app or GPS
I understand. But would something bad/undesirable happen if you set a coilspring using an extension instead of a cable stake?Coilsprings are set up with a swivel off the baseplate, usually about 4 links of machine chain, another swivel, 4 or 6 links more of chain, swivel, cable stake.
That makes sense. Thanks again.I think it would be hard to conceal the cable. With a cable stake or rebar stake you are setting them under your trap, and bedding the trap over them. An extension would have to be ran and you would have to hide/ bury it. I'm sure it has been done before or maybe a blind trail set type might work alright, I just see it being more of a hassle. Any animal finding the extension could potentially pull the trap/ dig it up fairly easy.
Thanks to all your help I got my first coon this morning. Nice prime looking 15lb sow. Only took 10 days and 8 DPs to do it! Ha ha! Tuna was the bait that finally worked. Skinned it today and will flesh tomorrow. Learned a lot - thank you bro! Looking forward to fox and yote. I have been waxing mb550s and filling up the jet sled to go set k9s in a few days. Amazing how involved trapping is. A lot to learn.Grinners strike again, going to try and stop on my way home and remake the sets that have been compromised....Also stopped at another property I have permission for and got a few mink boxes out. This is near a swamp/ marsh area and the owner has chickens, turkeys, and peacocks as pets so I try and get some critters off the land every year for him.
Congrats, it's addicting. You will find when the weather drops coons tend to hole up, warm nights they come out in force....there are a bunch of YouTube channels I watch for trapping, his is one of the best I've found.
Ha! Yes, exactly.I've come to the conclusion most baits and lures catch more trappers...yes a quality bait and lure help and are a big part of a set, but I do not think there is any magical one....as a matter of fact I am in the process of trying a homemade concoction this year. I have tried many brands in the past and haven' personally found one I've felt worked better and became my normal user..
Side note, I am getting really annoyed this year. I have been having issues all deer season and trapping season with people tresspassing on a piece of private property I have permission for. This am I had quad tracks all through and they drove right over a set and my mb. People suck
