I have been on patrol actually, though I try to avoid bringing that up because anecdotal war-stories are a-dime-a-dozen on the internet. I carried a lot of weight on patrol and had my firearm at the ready because I had to.
Hunting isn't the same as combat. Lighter weight is preferred because...
Most of the state lands (NY) i"ve hunted in don't offer shots anything over 100 yards. You'd really have to search hard to find an area where you'd take a shot that qualifies as "long range." Private land, there might be more opportunity for that due to the farm fields. But even there...
It's a bit of a drive for me, but I'd be interested in going to this range every now and then if the guy is able to open it.
NY is in serious need of some dedicated long range facilities.
A) there isn't a whole lot of opportunity for long range hunting in NY, outside of some of the farm country. Most shots seem to be within the 200 yard range; most are even closer than that.
B) 17lbs is a lot of rifle to be carrying around for a hunt, some would say too much rifle. It worked...
Target rifles really don't make for good hunting rifles and vice versa. The heavy-profile barrel, bipods, heavier stock is just too much weight to haul around in the field. I suppose it could work for a tree stand hunt, but that's about it.
As for .308, yep, any good hunting loads should be...
What is the source for that regulation? I don't think the presence of a scope has anything to do with whether or not open carry of a handgun is allowed.
I'm pretty sure you can open carry when afield on public land (unless carrying is specifically forbidden for that area). Hunters, trackers...
By default, target shooting is allowed on state land unless specifically prohibited. What Dantrap posted is incorrect, or perhaps the gouge he got from the DEC is incorrect. Or there could have been a rule change that he and his friends weren't aware of. I've shot plenty of times on state...
Are you referring to Glock's integrated trigger safety? I don't consider that to have the same functionality as a lever or grip safety or the redundancy of a DA/SA hammer.
Unless I'm alert-and-to-the-dirt or actually on target, my safety is kept on. On the ergonomic setup's at least (m9a1...
No, what I'm saying is I like having a mechanical safety backup for my own safety awareness. People make mistakes, even those that practice all the time.
I agree with that. I also agree that 'safe handling' entails keeping the weapon on safe until ready to fire.
I realize different people are comfortable with different firearms and carry types. I'm not speaking for everyone.
I would be interested to know if everyone who carries a striker-fired pistol (like a glock) IWB or appendix holster is really practicing what you preach (constant trigger...
I'm not going to even try to speculate on how much of his account is truthful versus fabricated. That's a futile endeavour.
A good holster/carry setup is important, but it’s not foolproof (which you seem to acknowledge). Trigger awareness is important, but it takes just one momentary lapse...
I agree with you on the holster part, but according to the person's own account, the ND happened when the pistol fell out of his grip and back into his pocket. Such a ND can happen just as easily with a holster. Trigger awareness is an important thing for a pistol owner to have in mind; I'm...
That's because my point is more concerned with a mindset that it is with the hard math. Moreover there isn't a whole lot to "compute" as some of the assumptions you and I were making were theoretical.
The whole story which started this thread was about a 60 year old guy who had been shooting...
As I already said, I'm not trying to argue that ND's have a big statistical presence. I am saying that they happen far more often that many people would like to believe. I saw them happen more than a few times while in the military, and those were with a trained pool of professionals. I...
Because
1) I don't think 'eyeing' the trigger as the gun is fully holstered is always feasible with every type of carry setup
and
2) I don't think many, or even, most people will actually do adhere to that, especially during quick presentation drills or real life scenario's. People say they...
I think that's a very conservative estimate on your part for the # of unreported ND's, but even if we go with that # it certainly isn't nothing. In the military circles, I know that ND's happen enough that everyone has either heard of one happening or seen one first hand.
I'm not trying to...
I can put a thumb on a DA/SA pistol's hammer to physically confirm it is safe as I reholster. Some pistols also come with external manual safety levers which again I can visually and or physically check for safe reholster. I don't see the same safety redundancies with a striker-fired pistol...
I will point out that is just one study and it only covered injury/fatality inducing events. I do truly believe the are far more ND's occurring which go unreported (the author of the article makes the same assumption). That said, I do acknowledge the rate of ND's is probably still low, but I...
Well it does have an external trigger safety but it didn't really work too well in the incident referenced previously. I'm also just not a fan of a striker-fired pistol (w/o an additional safety lever) for re-holstering....you really have to be careful that the trigger doesn't get snagged on...
Well I won't speak for you, but in my view: yes, castration is much worse than losing a leg. I do my best to keep a pistol oriented in a safe direction, but if I have to choose between flagging my junk and flagging the side of my leg during a reholster, the choice is a no-brainer for me.
Also...
It really depends on the application and the type of firearm.
For a bolt action, especially one that is used for target shooting:1) you don't really have to clean much, since there is no gas or piston system and 2) other than running a few oiled patches through the barrel, you really don't want...
I understand that the civilian enthusiasts, and LEO/Military to some degree, have started to trend towards affordable, reliable, striker-fired pistols (hence why Glocks are so popular). I just can't ever see myself carrying a hot one that lacks an external safety for this very reason. There is...
You made one comment, but there has been a constant, and distracting, barrage of comments criticizing this match for it's 'bolt only' rule.
I'd wager that most semi-auto rifles owned by competitive out-of-state shooters are NOT SAFE Act compliant simply because the owners have no reason to...
You and your compadre's need to give it a rest. Many semi-auto rifles, as configured out of state, are not SAFE Act compliant.
It's a logical requirement, and even if you don't agree it's not your call. There are plenty of long range events that are bolt action only.
I have no doubt that...
Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea, let me preface this by saying: I'm not a cop.
I've fired more than a few semi-auto rifles, though I've never thought of owning one after I moved to NY due to the SAFE Act. I see more than a few AR-15's and other semi-auto rifles that look to have...
Action - Get a Remington 700 action if you plan on getting aftermarket work done. It's by far the most popular action and thus its easier to find a gunsmith who can work on it. You could also consider a Savage action for the same reason. If you don't want to bother with aftermarket...
Yeah, I'm not picking on those guys out in the Catskills. I'm sure there is a lot of work, and money, that goes into something like that, and they need a return on that investment. I do think asking for $300 per year on top of $20 per hour of range use is a bit much for the average shooter...
I think your best bet is to network with as many long-range and PRS-type groups as possible within NY, NJ, VT, OH and PA. Curt Drewel is the only contact I can think of for western NY, but I'm sure there are other people to coordinate with from elsewhere.
It certainly doesn't hurt to advertise...
Buddy, he did call it a bolt-gun match. You even quoted him stating as much on his own website: "This match is Bolt Action only, to prevent any violations of the NY SAFE Act. No more than 10 round magazines."
The SAFE Act is relevant for NY shooters and for visiting shooters, whether we like...
I understand what you're getting at.
I joined this forum to get some insight into NY long range shooting events and to coordinate with fellow enthusiasts. I didn't come here to exchange gossip or discuss my personal interests and accomplishments....though the previous sentence probably gives a...
I'm not sure what the original beef was, or why I'm getting lumped into it. I wasn't arguing with anyone, but rather was providing feedback on some long range networking opportunities.
As for introductions, this is an internet forum, and a gun one at that. I'll be more than happy to introduce...
Who are the "two" you are addressing?
Post count doesn't mean jack squat in terms of actual experience. I hope this match, and the follow-up ones do well. NY needs more PRS-style matches like this.
Definitely do that. I don't think he is affiliated with PRS per se (at least he wasn't when I last saw him), but he is known within the precision rifle community. Former USMC scout sniper. I believe he does private instruction for local LE's as well.
He may have some students who want to put...
How many more matches after this one?
Also, have you talked to Curt Drewel over at Long Gun Training? He has got a pretty significant precision rifle crowd that he teaches in western NY. He might have some interested shooters to send your way.
Target shooting on state land is allowed unless specifically prohibited. The same rules for hunting apply to target shooting (distance away from occupied dwelling, no shooting over roadways, ect.).
It can be scary, if you act like an idiot and shoot without any planning. However, if you do...
The range facility looks to be pretty decent.
The pricing is a bit out there. $300 for 'Sheepdog' membership and you still have to pay a $20 hourly rate? I'm not sure who is going to pay that much simply for range access.
Unfortunately, I can't make that date, otherwise I'd be there.
Is there a new long distance range in Orleans, NY? I'd definitely like to get into future matches or just go to the range to do some shooting.
I can't seem to find many long distance facilities in NY.
