Just curious but do they want to be farmers?

Not for nothing but I’ve seen a good amount of farms in my day and I’ve honestly never seen a black man working on the farm. Some Jamaican migrant workers but that’s it. They won’t be awarded this land either since they aren’t citizens.

Also aren’t for the most part minorities centered in urban areas? Not to many urban farms. There are also a good amount of Mexican farmers in the USA from what I have seen. Will they be successful? What good is it to give them land if they don’t know what they are doing? No stigma there or anything. I can’t. Run a farm successfully either so nothing against them.

This is a stupid plan honestly.

From my perspective. (Been around farms my entire life.)

I grew up on a farm. There were other farms all around us.

When I moved to NY I bought a house in farm country. If I walk North through a few fields behind my house I end up at a large dairy farm. If I head west from my house there are a couple of family dairy farms just down the road. One of those farms I used to milk the girls on a fill in basis.

3 miles further down the road is a large corporate dairy farm that produces 20,000 gallons of milk daily. That farm has a ton of employees.

Just down the road to the East of me is a large agricultural farm.
It's a large operation and they have a ton of employees. They have some horses too.

Not to far South of me there is a large pig farm.

I know some people that work on these farms.

What I am getting at is this... Considering all of that text above, I have never seen a black man
working on any of those farms. From a kid on our farm to present.

That's my perspective anyways... YMMV

It is damn near impossible for ANYONE to start farming for profit on your own. Maybe as recent as 75-100 years ago but not today. This is just more failed socialism.

From the article: Under the bill, up to 32 million acres would move to Black ownership over a decade — nearly seven times the 4.7 million acres now in Black farms. A new USDA agency, the Equitable Land Access Service, would administer the program. The USDA would buy land from willing sellers at fair market value for use in the program. Up to 20,000 grants of 160 acres would be made annually through 2030. Recipients would be new or experienced Black farmers. Beginning farmers would be required to complete a training program.

I suppose if the land is coming from a "willing seller" it's not as bad as land taken a gunpoint like it has been in many African nations (which by the way have been literally begging the white farmers to come back because of the starvation seen in those countries) but its still a stupid idea. I seriously doubt there are that many people (let along "black" people) who are that interested in real farming. Most people I know have this romantic notion of farming as plowing up an acre or two, throwing some seeds on the ground, and sitting on a rocking chair on the back porch watching it grow and then cashing in at the end of the summer. Anyone who has worked a real farm and tried to make a profit knows that ain't at all what it's like. Just another example of the social justice warrior bullshit permeating society and creating another do-nothing expensive program on the backs of tax payers.

For the record, in 2020, most white people I know wouldn't know what the hell to do with 40 acres and a mule. I seriously doubt that most blacks would be any better, even with training programs.

Black farmers win $1.25 billion in discrimination suit

The settlement of the case, known as Pigford II, is contingent on Congress approving $1.15 billion for the farmers, in addition to $100 million already provided in the Farm Bill.

For decades, black farmers said they were unjustly being denied farm loans or subjected to longer waits for loan approval because of racism, and accused the USDA of not responding to their complaints.


The original Pigford lawsuit, named after North Carolina farmer Timothy Pigford, was filed against the USDA in 1997, and settled two years later when the government compensated black farmers left out of USDA loan and assistance programs.

More than 13,000 farmers able to provide proof of their claims of discrimination were awarded $50,000 each and given debt relief in a package worth more than $1 billion.

But tens of thousands of claims were denied for missing the filing deadline. The settlement in Pigford II would allow these farmers to again make their claims

Step 2) Farmers don't have sufficient knowledge or investment dollars to equip and run an industrial size farm
Step 3) Farmers sell farmland plots for pennies on the dollar to Democratic cronies and politicians
Step 4) Politicians and cronies sell land to developers (or back to legit farmers) for handsome profits

Less of an equal opportunity program and more of a politician enrichment program.

Race is irrelevant. 99.9% of city dwellers would not make it farming, even if they had a USDA team of advisors telling them what to do every step of the way.

It is *way* more work than they would be willing to put in.

The average farmer does more actual work before breakfast on Monday than most of them do all week. And thats speaking of the gainfully employed, let alone the moochers.

Farming is one of the toughest jobs there is. Even experienced small farmers fail regularly thru no fault of their own. The practice of giving out small parcels to farm has been an abject failure where it has been tried n places like Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and warming up for failure in SA currently. Also the amount of infrastructure to run a 160ac farm and 1600ac farm is hardly different. All this costs a lot of money.

With the end of Apartheid in the late 80's, early 90's the Dutch farm owners were kicked off their farms. The black workers (who were paid well under Apartheid) now had to try running the farm and fend for themselves. They failed miserably and are mostly starving today, but they own a farm...

Exactly my first thought as well. Most true "farmers" are actual farmers because they've been doing it their whole life. Its not something you just up and do one day in your middle aged years. Its not a job, its a way of life.
