They are in Scio in alleghany county. If you’re interested I’d be happy to oblige and accompany you.
They do have a coyote problem. 3 years ago I saw 45-50 turkeys in 3 trees and I shot one almost immediately opening day. Last hunting season I was walking up for a late afternoon hunt about 5pm and a red squirrel was pissed off at me. He was chattering like crazy and a coyote came running at him and me. It was 40 yards away and I heard it. I pivoted to see what was coming at me and it took off. My parents hear coyotes all the time at night.

That's not too far from either of my camps. We have camps in Hinsdale and Freedom. I grew up half way between Franklinville and Cuba. I know the area a little. First thing is, does Scio have their own police dept ? If so, a call to the dept would be smart. Find out if there are any ordnances against shooting at night. Some towns have laws against shooting at nigjt, some don't. It may also be the case that although the property is said to be in Scio, it is not as far as jurisdiction goes. Need to know for sure. Also, the neighbors will probably need to be taken into consideration. After all the legalities are understood, it's a matter of setting up a strategy and then executing it. Aerial views of the land ( google earth ?) Can be a big help. Find the funnel and set up down wind of it. If you send me an address, I will try to find a likely location.

I have electronic calls and rifles equipped with nightvision and thermal optics as well as kill lights. All you really need is the will to go out at night and stay out for a while. I'm game. Let me know !

Gotcha. PM me if you decide to. I'm in Westchester and I'm planning on going squirrel hunting up in Putnam at least once in the next 3 weeks.

As far as safety concerns, magnum primers are no big deal in black powder guns. Black powder is much more forgiving than smokeless and less sensitive to something like using a hotter primer. You could double-charge a BP maximum load and probably not get any more injured than a very sore shoulder where the same mistake would blow-up anything using smokeless powder. The biggest dangers with BP are leaving airspace by not seating the projectile onto the powder or loading smokeless powder instead of BP or a BP substitute. Both of those can be explosive mistakes. Which reminds me of an awesome IV8888 video where he abuses a muzzleloader to death in the name of redneck science.

Thanks @Xae289, I will let you know! One other dumb question- if I am using saboted bullets do I need to use a patch as well? I dont know why but have had a dickens trying to find that on the internet... :banghead:

Did you already buy the ammo components (bullet, sabot/patch, powder)? To not mislead you on my knowledge, I'm honestly no pro on muzzleloading rifles. I've shot a few (1 each antique, replica, and modern) and did a lot of research when I considered buying one. But when it comes to black powder, most of my experience comes from my percussion cap revolver.

From what I've seen, patch or sabot is an either-or thing. Modern bullets with copper jackets are cupped in a sabot to load. I'm guessing hard-cast lead bullets would also be sabotted. Soft lead projectiles like balls or conicals get placed on a lubricated patch. I've never seen or heard of both a sabot and patch being used. I remember reading that projectiles that would be sabotted would be more accurate in modern muzzleloaders because they have a different (faster?) twist rate that's better for accuracy in those types of projectiles. Meanwhile, antiques and replicas do better with patched, soft lead projectiles because that's what they were designed to shoot.

If you have a lot of questions on muzzleloading, I'd say the reloading forum is likely to have a few muzzleloading rifle shooters that have more knowledge and experience than I do and could give you better answers.

Can someone please help me figure out how to transfer still photos from my thermal scope to my phone so I can post them ? I really want you to see the pictures of the 2 owls attacking my electronic call ! I was out coyote hunting this evening. I was sitting up in a treestand that overlooks a field and the driveway to camp. At about 8:00 tonight, I was scanning the field with the thermal. The Foxpro was playing "baby cottontail in distress". The decoy was set to random motion. As I was scanning the field, I noticed action at the call. I watched as 2 owls were attacking the decoy while the call sang out rabbit cries ! The owls would not leave it alone. I chased them off with a bright white light a few times but they kept coming back. I had to quit for the night before they destroyed the decoy. They did tear it up some. It no longer has eyes, one of the tails is gone, and it has talon holes throughout.

I failed to catch the interest of any coyotes that I'm aware of, but at least something was interested in an easy meal. Too bad for the owls it turned out to be cloth.

You live in Tonawanda, so you live fairly close. 50 mins away? You should stop out one of these days and we could get your shit figured out with the pictures and go out for a couple of stands.

Went deer hunting during the day and coyote hunting at 8pm yesterday.

When I went out last night with my friend/farmer who owns some of the property I hunt. I Gave him my mono to look through that takes pics and video and I looked through my scope, that takes neither. I called something in and for whatever reason my buddy was looking behind us at the noise I told him I heard earlier in the hedgerow behind us. He can hear about as well as my 11 year old pup,,,,not very well at all. Anyways, the animal came running in at a distance and I couldn't tell if it was a fox or a coyote,,,which wouldnt of mattered if it was Oct 25th. It got to about 150yds away and it sure looked like a coyote so I took the shot after barking at him to get him to stop. I barked to get him to stop because he was trying to circle us and he would of got downwind of us. Well I missed and my buddy finally seen it when it started running away, after I scared the shit out of him, when I pulled the trigger. He was still looking behind us when I pulled the trigger.

Last two times out it's been dead until after 9:00 which is quite...annoying.

Also I have concluded over several hunting seasons that for me at least doe are substantially harder to kill than bucks. I find them massively more skittish. They will enter an area and look around for a long time, sniffing constantly, and the slightest thing makes them bail. Bucks are largely stupid and just walk around like they don't give a damn--at any point in the season for me.

This doesn't even include the fact that if they are in a group of doe it's super difficult to draw on anybody because eyes everywhere and the deer I tend to want (biggest) is also at the front.

It's a FLIR Thermosight Pro PTS536. It has a micro USB port for downloading stills and videos, and I'm assuming also for uploading new software into it. The problem is that I think it needs to be connected to a real computer, which I don't have. I don't know how you would download directly to a phone. It may be possible, I am in fact a techno-dinosaur.

Both stands I had deer bedded around me, which are great sentries and both time the deer alerted me to the presence of coyote coming in.
I was calling with female and male challenge calls and the deer didn't budge, but when the real thing showed up, they would look in the direction of the coyote coming in way before I could detect their presence.
The Deer just move around 50 yards away and look around.
Even after the shot, deer hang around sometimes, until I scare them away with my movement.
They have great night vision, but their noses and hearing are way better at night.
At night, If they don't move, they think you can't see them, which works, unless you have thermal.

I borrowed my mother's laptop, the one she's been trying to give me for the past 2 years... anyway, after putting a $ 50 battery in it, I managed to download the still pictures of the owls off my thermal scope. I've been told how to email them to myself so they are on my phone and I can post them, but I have to go to someplace that has wifi to do that. Using the phone as a hotspot doesn't seem to work. However, after showing the pictures to someone at work, I'm not sure I should post them at all. The thermal pictures are hard to decipher. The outline of the owls is there, but since everything is black and white with just the eyes and beak showing heat, it is hard to see unless you know what you're looking at. I'll try to get them posted even if they're difficult to interpret.

Bought one something like this. Accepts large & small SD cards and allows me to download onto my phone right in the woods, or I can bring it and the card back and download into my laptop. Works well.....

What the hell is that thing, and what is it supposed to do ?

My thermal scope doesn't have a SD card, just internal memory. Not sure what that thing wouls do for me ?

I learned how to get the still photos off the scope and onto the laptop. I'm presuming the video would download from the scope the same way, although I haven't tried it. Right now there is only 1 video on the scope, and it's nothing interesting.

That thing will transfer your internal memory to an SD card, that you can plug into your laptop.
That's if it has the correct male plug on the adapter to insert into your scope ?
No more cable from your scope to laptop.
I download my videos onto my U tube account and can edit them there, plus it converts them to links.
