This bear paid us a visit today. Stole my bird feeder and then stayed a few yards from my house for about 2 hours, eating sunflower seeds. I hope he doesn't come back when my garden starts to produce. I put all the bird seed and feeders away. Now I am going out with my dogs carrying a rifle. Wildlife control said to only call them back if he attacks me or my dogs or tries to break into my house.

In a nutshell, pick out a couple 100 square feet and let nature take its course.
I have to start a new one though, I decided the spot we had ours is a good berry growing spot so I basically tamed it down to grow a couple of sapling trees that were coming in and some blackberries. Was a little too close to the house (tick habitat) anyway. It did pay off in that I now have a sassafras and a black birch sapling coming in, and the ground is a lot more level/actually has some dirt on it. It was originally a depression and I filled and leveled with wood chips.

That’s a great project honestly. We are losing our meadowland habitat and lots of creatures use that habitat to survive.

I'm a big fan of miracle grow potting soil. The 2 Cu. Ft. bag runs $11-12 on sale. Definitely worth it IMO. I'm also a big fan of Jack's Classic 20-20-20 while I'm trying to figure out fertilization around transplant time. Sometimes I get the plants in the ground late and they need fertilizer in the pots. Jack's has never burned them and they definitely show improvement. It even works spayed on the leaves if you have plants in trouble. I sometimes get that with corn or squashes post transplant. I don't have real good soil to begin with, and neither one of those really likes being transplanted.

There are plenty of ways to compost without having to worry about vermin. I started out with nothing more that a 30gal. Plastic drum. I drilled holes in the Bottom and on the sides about 4” from the bottom for drainage. Put All of your veggie and fruit scraps in there, along with washed egg shells, used coffee grounds and leaves or grass clippings and you have the makings for a great compost that can be used within a couple of weeks. Just mix it up every couple of days with a pitchfork or shovel and your good to go. You’ll be surprised how fast the material composts down.
BTW, I used to raise and sell worms many years ago. They love used coffee grounds mixed in with their bedding material.
