Time to kill squash borers physically. Bastards.

And first year ever, one small section of the garden, the beans and peas have died, along with the squash plant. It’s downhill from the pool, which has been overflowing due to the rain.

at the same time, I know that squash plant has a borer in it. Noticed this morning.
I’ve treated with sevin and neem due to something eating leaves, and no bugs seen.

anyone grow garlic as a perennial?
anyone let the scapes go to seed and plant those?

Well my tomatoes are making a speedy come back. Some of my pepper plants are starting to make a come back also. We need a few day of sunshine to really see them come back. My onions appear to be a huge flop. I might not harvest them in the fall and see if the keep through the winter. Maybe fill in the dead loss in the spring.

I'm still hoping to add 3 more raised beds by fall. Any good late season crops I could work plant in them?

Also what does everyone do for winter storage? Root cellars? can I put them on my stairs leading out of the basement? The outside is a standard bilco door and the house side has an insulated wall/door.

The rainy week we've had, my garden is going full bore. It's nice not having to go out and water multiple times a day!

Interesting idea. I just might give that a try in a patch of garden that I let grow wild with herbs.
P.S. I’ve used Captain Jacks dead bug Brew with good success in eradicating squash borers. I inject it directly into the base of the affected plant with a small needle turkey baster.

i might have to try that too. They say neem gets absorbed by the roots and works that way.

considering people down the road sell zucchini and squash for $.25-$.50 apiece, I don’t even know why I bother lol.

I’ve got the same with my garden. The grape tomatoes are everywhere but so far I’ve picked four that we’re ripe. My Roma plants are loaded up and just starting to change color. A few good days of sunshine should do wonders.

We’ve eaten all our romain, butter crisp and red leaf lettuce. I’ve picked a few grape tomatoes but the majority aren’t close to ripe yet. My beefsteak and San Marzano tomatoes are also still green. Last night and today we’ve sautéed zucchini and onions for dinner. Picked 5 more tonight.

I have two HUGE cucumber plants growing out of a deep box I build this spring and blocking my back steps. They are volunteers from the compost pile most likely. There are at least a dozen blossoms opening on each every morning, then they shrivel up and fall off by the evening or next morning. Haven't seen too many bees this year. Not sure if that is the main problem, or they are just some mutant grocery store variety seeds. I have had better luck this year with the stuff growing in the basement. There is a whole crop of peppers down there that are ripe right now.

Everything here is going crazy from all the damn rain we’ve had and humid conditions. The spaghetti squash is climbing the trellis I made and so are my cucumbers.

Hoping to get compost from the county this week.
add it to the top of my squash and tomato stems so they can root better.
The former, thanks to those damn larvae. Every year. Every.

Our yellow squash is doing really well. We’ve eaten a few of them already.

All the rain, the tomatoes (all 10 plants) are really taking off. We’ve almost eaten all the lettuce. Cucumbers are starting to show some promise. The peas and beans are coming along, although only one bean seed sprouted.

Had to pick what I could of the zucchini this morning. We got another severe thunderstorm last night . This one with straight line winds that trashed all the zucchini plants, as well as some trees out back. This is what I was able to salvage.

My wife made currant jelly, raspberry pie and a blueberry pie all in one week! Turn off the TV, radio, and computer and life is good.

The small garden we put in has done pretty well. We put things into the ground quite early in hopes of being able to harvest early before a late August departure for Newfoundland. At times we were required to use our hoops and plastic with a couple of old railroad lanterns burning all night for protection from the cold / frost. Yellow and green beans produced very well and are frozen for winter use. Today I pickled 14 jars of bread and butter pickles to add to the 12 jars of hot dill pickles already done. Picked the first two tomatoes and there are plenty remaining to ripen on three plants. If we need to pick green we have a decent relish recipe we can put them in. Others can be left for our friends to pick. Four squash will be ready before we leave mid August. Others will be left to fend for themselves as we have done in the past for harvest in early october when we return. Onions and garlic were pulled end of last week. Garlic is braided and hung for drying.
That leave the potatoes which have grown like mad and I was hoping we would dig when we return.
One question on the potatoes for the gardeners here. Can anyone suggest what is eating off the blossoms? Please see Pic. I mist them with a Neem oil solution in an attempt at pest control.

Some grubs got into our squash plants. Hopefully it was contained to only one.

My berries aren’t ripening very well either. Slowly one by one. My peaches are coming on strong but I’m fighting to pick them before the damned squirrels get them.

I’ll pick some more blueberries tomorrow and my blackberries are starting to turn.
Here is my peach tree haul. Good thing it produced for me or it was going to the burn pile. It’s not the tree it’s the freaking squirrels. I know the peaches are small but I didn’t thin them because the squirrels so it paid off.
Also funny thing is the squirrels would eat one or two here or there and they were getting close to ripening and within three hours of me coming gone from vacation they ate 12 of them and left them scattered around my backyard. I picked the ones they could easily get at but then today they started to literally chew the branches off the tree so they could get at the ones on thin branches… I picked the rest then. Fuck the squirrels I hate them.

Planted carrots yesterday. A bit late but I’ve been busy and lazy at the same time. Lazy because it only took me a few minutes and should have done it sooner.

My Hubbard squash looks like a bust! I cannot find one blossom that has taken a set. Man, that is a huge disappointment.

I'm thinking too much rain at the wrong time. The pumpkins right next to the Hubard's are doing fine, leaves look green and hearty, but the ground is dry there.
