I think they would have been better off keeping the 40gr weight and working on the reliability of rimfire. Also, statistics show that 22LR is already more than adequate for self defense.

For me, it's just another option to include my 9mm, 12 Gauge, and now the 10/22 as a 3rd option for when SHTF.

I'd take a .22 over harsh language, but prefer something a little more robust.

Awhile back I don't remember what youtube channel it was but they were comparing ballistic wounding on some various .22lr loads and if I remember correctly CCI stingers did surprisingly well, more than I was expecting at least.


Just keep in mind people might mock a .22 for self defense but if a criminal is taking return fire they're not going to stand there and try to decide what caliber is shooting back at them and if it ls worth them continuing their attack or if they should flee. If they're being shot at 99.99% will flee

If I ever find myself in a hand to hand battle for my life, I would prefer my opponent had a few rounds of .22lr in him first.

Every little bit helps.

Of course I would prefer he had a few rounds of .50bmg in him even more, but I'll take what I can get.

I actually just spent the last 10 minutes trying to find any stats or studies or anything like that on who runs towards and who runs away from gunfire. I found nothing. I think his statement was mainly theoretical, but I'd be willing to bet that the VAST majority of people (maybe closer to 99.92%?) who are actively being shot at will run or at least seek cover, which can give you the out you need to escape.

No research just my opinion. Most people tend to not like being shot at. Criminals like easy targets not targets that fight back.

Not trying to be argumentative, just looking at the different ways that a .22LR could be effective as a defensive round. Personally I'd classify it like pepper spray or an air horn for the most part. If I that's all I have available and I can slow down, distract, or disorient my attacker for a short amount of time, I've got a window of escape available to flee and live to fight another day.

I buy stingers every chance I get when they are available. As far as .22lr go they're my favorite I've used so far. I have enough bulk stuff so I'm trying to get more good stuff like stingers when I find them in stock.

Lucky Gunner did some pretty extensive .22 gel testing, linked below.

There are only two situations I wear a 22. If my Ruger SP101 4" bbl revolver is the only handgun I bring to the range or as my sidearm for small game hunting with a 12 ga. In those cases, if I do anything else while I'm out, I carry it loaded with Aguila Interceptor flat points. I don't use a hollow point because I don't want expansion in a .22, I want penetration. I go for the Interceptors specifically because they're fastest 40 grain bullet that isn't a round nose and I believe that even a tiny flat point is better than a round nose. I figure I'm already carrying the least optimal caliber for self-defense I own, so I carry the round that I think will make the most of it.

Usually carry a speed strip w 10 extra rds, but honestly, at that point I'd probably be better off using the heavy little Ruger as a bludgeon or a boomerang than trying to reload it.

I know, and my answer was basically its his theory. Its quite reasonable to expect people to run away being shot at. Or at least seek cover.... lol.

Id say its probably impossible to study gunfire events and the reactions of those involved. Everyrbing would be inference.

Selection bias.

You'll find a lot more video's of people tripping over their own feet than you will of them walking normally down the street too. But that says more about what people will upload a video of than what happens more commonly in the world.
