I recently bought a Remington 597 .22 LR. It is my first rifle, I've only owned shotguns prior to this purchase. It comes with a stock 10 round mag, but I have seen some 30 round mags that can be purchased for this rifle. The question is, is the NY 10 round mag restrictions only for handguns or do long rifle also fall under this?

I recently bought a 597 with the bull barrel and I love it. If you haven't already, you may want to replace the extractor though, as the oem one has been the cause of a lot of malfunctions with the 597.

Much appreciated! I actually ordered it too lol. Its sitting in my desk. I might change it tonight so I can take it to the range again on sunday. Have you changed yours? Did it really make a difference?

I did change mine. I swapped them out before I ever shot the gun. Figured with what I've read about the issues the 597's have had I wouldn't wait. It's inexpensive so why not? Mine has worked flawlessly so far.

Fits my hands better than a 10/22.

Good to know. I got mine about a month ago and ive only been to the range once. I mostly sighted it in but holy shit does it malfunction. It got a little annoying to shoot. Im going to change the extractor now. Now im exited! Lol

The springs wear and make themselves go wonky, making it hard to load the full 10.

The older mags were bad from what i've read and that they are also the cause of some malfunction. What I learned was to only buy the metal mags with the number 10 in a circle roll mark on them. I can take a picture later.

I had this problem from the first day was so frustrated it would jam after 2 to 3 shots they wanted to send the rifle back to Remington I had it for one day then I found the info below and the rifle is rock solid

The other problem with these guide rods is how tight the set screws may be tightened down. The book says 10 inch pounds. Everyone on here agrees that is to much. If they are tightened to tight they bend and again slow the bolt causing the aforementioned issues. The solution is easy. First take them out and run them over a flat surface to make sure they aren't bent. Then polish them. Then after they are correctly re-installed simply turn in the set screw until you feel them touch the rod then back them out 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. Once you put the gun back in the stock they wont be coming out.

@DroBrens here is my 597. I really like the short bull barrel and the look of the longer scope on it. Might seem weird to others but for some reason I just like that look. Anyway, I'm very happy with this rifle. I will admit, taking the bolt out and putting it back in can be a pain but the double guide rods do make it very smooth. Would be nice if the stock were rubberized too.

Love the wood bro. Wood is one of my favorite things, I used to work in capentry, so I really got into it. I've been thinking about getting a gun with a nice woodgrain, but I'm still unsure about which one it should be lol.

My set up is not as awesome as you guys, but I did change the extractor. I took it to the range today and it worked flawlessly. Anything else you guys would change to improve performance on it? Aside from those awesome scopes.Lol

That's a fine set up man. Did you get a package deal with the scope or did you add it afterwards? Mine is regular .22lr. I used to have a .22mag back in the day. It was a nice Marlin bolt action. But now .22mag is too hard to find at times and expensive for what you get IMO.

Thanks, it's pretty basic. I will hopefully make it better within some time. I actually caught a package deal at Dick's sporting goods. It was $229, as you see it. I called a few of them and they were out of stock, until I called the one in Palisades mall and they said they had one left! When I got there, it was the display so the guy gave me a 10% discount. I bought an extra mag with that! lol
