Felony arrest , DWI , etc ? What is the story , why did you get denied for your permit ?

No felonies. I didn't get denied, I have my hearing in January. And I just think it may be possible I get denied and just wanted to go with an attorney to hopefully prevent that. The way I read the law I should be eligible, but its the up to the judges discretion.

I would lean toward the judge thinking that with 12 arrests, you are a habitual law breaker. 1, maybe 2 could be called "youthful indiscretion". 12? I am not a lawyer, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The way things are today, not a good climate for someone with that many arrests to try to get a concealed carry permit.

They were 12plus years ago and most were violations. And it's not a concealed carry permit. I applied for a sportsman

I think you will actually come across better without an attorney.
Be honest with the judge, sincerity counts. “Yes judge, I did a bit of stupid shit when I was younger. But I’ve matured and keep it clean.” Evidence to show a job, family, home ownership will all be helpful. If you have a clergyman who knows you and can vouch for your character, bring him. +1000 if you have small kids you can take in tow with you to court. Offer to take a drug test; the court probably won’t take you up on that. (But don’t do that if you will test positive . . . !)
An attorney doesn’t really have any legal expertise to bring here and a judge may resent it or feel you have something to hide. The only way you need an attorney is if the judge decides against you. Then get an attorney and file a motion to reargue or commence an Article 78 proceeding. Or, if you want to go for the full Monty, you can challenge by bring a 1983 case in Federal court.
Unfortunately notwithstanding the Heller and MacDonald cases, the current state of the law in New York is that a pistol license is a privilege and not a right. Don’t demand anything. Ask nicely.
And make sure to wear a suit, a tie, hide any tats, etc. Appearances count.

I did a little stupid in my earlier years and was denied for my permit , I turned around and filed an appeal THEN consulted with a 2A attorney .
The attorney I spoke to said it would be wise to speak for myself at my hearing for my appeal . He gave me some rather important instructions and I followed them to the T and 1 month later after my hearing I received an approval letter from the judge !
You must convince the judge you know you had done stupid and you have to much to lose today to do stupid again !!

Oh ok. Putnam I think is a little stricter but I guess it's worth a shot and possibly save a lot of money. How many charges did you have if you don't mind my asking?

Number of charges are irrelevant , types of charges and any convictions is what matters. The more time you put between you and any past arrests the better . Remember be honest with the judge and prove that you haven’t caused trouble in a long time and you won’t any time in the future.
I’d recommend that if you have drug or alcohol related arrests in your past you might want to consider a drug and alcohol evaluation from a reputable counselor . That’s assuming your not currently doing any illegal drugs and you don’t have an alcohol abuse issue.
