A spokeswoman for Frontier called the entire matter a misunderstanding. The airline has a policy banning certain styles of masks, but not an image of the flag, according to the airline executive.

Looks like not a policy but the hate of one little person.

Doesn’t smack of wearing a mask or not. More about the flag. As stated earlier, I’d back them up only via flag code cited at both Cornell and Wikipedia...they kinda match, maybe I should get a .gov thing, but still.

The implication is that the American flag was taken as offensive, and as with most simple narratives, I think it will take a while before we know the facts.

I myself regard the flag mostly as a fairly arbitrary piece of cloth whose importance isn’t via the appearance, but comes via the culture, ideals, and principles behind it. I wouldn’t denigrate the flag or take offense to it, but I neither understand offense to it nor slavish devotion to it. And in a practical sense, if it’s not supposed to be worn as an article of clothing or displayed as a cheap commercial ploy per the flag code, I’ll respect that.

But, via SCOTUS rulings, and my own judgements, I agree if the company had rules (apparently does not) which specified some flag or other symbols displayed by a passenger meant they could not board, I don’t necessarily see a constitutional issue. Businesses have a pretty broad brush for who they want to deny service. Take me as a semi-barefooter. Almost any business can deny me service for lacking even some flip flops. They can deny me for wearing a provocative shirt, almost on their own terms. There’s wide leeway for a private business concern to not serve someone on terms which wouldn’t fly (pun intended) for a government entity.

Maybe. I’m kind of in a weird in between world where the flag is just a piece of cloth to me, an arbitrary design where what matters are the morals, ideals, and actions backing it up, and not so much the flag itself in whatever physical form it takes. What small quirk in history would it have taken that we had a Nazi flag and Hittie the Hun had some variation on our flag? Not much, so what’s important isn’t the flag, or its form, but what backs it up. The power of our constitution isn’t a symbol expressed in a flag, because if flags didn’t exist, the ideals of our constitution still would.

But yet, if I’m handling a flag, I obey the flag code. Even if I don’t go full “flaggot”, I’m still not going to denigrate it, and my Cub Scout days still prevail, I treat it according to flag code, and I won’t wear it as clothing or fashion, or use it on a disposable item. Call it etiquette, but it’s still a good place to fall back to in any situation where you aren’t sure what to do.

That said, I think it’s pretty okay to run it upside down these days. The republic feels rather under duress, and it’s only in the last year or maybe less where I feel that’s fully justified.

I’m not going to wear flag clothing, but I’m not also going to default to saying the guy is an a-hole for doing it. I don’t think the airline endorsed this, it was a vindictive person. I’d have let the guy through even acknowledging the “flag on the play” (teehee, couldn’t resist) which I’d have seen. Some things aren’t worth the effort.
