Reportedly they'd been doing a bunch of life-fire shooting near the set. Most likely the armorer was supplying ammo for that, whether it was for background training (legitimate) as to what shooting live fire is like, or whether it was just for shits and giggles. And most likely the "armorer" just had rounds laying around all over the place in her work area and got them mixed up.

There were so many failures in this shit show, but at the end of the day the Alec was running the entire shit show and he was the one who took the gun without checking it and just whipped it out and fired it for no reason (wasn't even scripted).

Really this is no different than the retired cop who shot a library officer trainee in DC in another thread here, during a photoshoot after the training, as a dumb "joke" while forgetting he'd switched his training pistol for his service pistol. That guy got 3 years.

Movies involving firearms are pointed at people All the time. The better question is why was there a functioning firearm being used on the set in the first place. Most movies now a days use period correct prop guns. Everything works exactly as it should except for the fact that it CANNOT fire a live round.

I'll add to this, we aren't making movies in the 1950's. We have all high end computerized CGI and video editing, green screen, crap all available now. Especially more so for a funded movie that has a substantial cash flow.

No need to use real weapons on a set. Or if they do, there are plugged so that a round, even a dummy round couldn't chamber. Also no ammo (including blanks) is allowed on set.

Here's the reason for the trial, evidence being presented, witnesses being cross-examined, and ultimately verdicts. I have half a mind to think like you do @Zerex. But hear me out....

If this movie were being filmed on the lot at Paramount, MGM or any Hollywood studio, I can get on board with your logic about Baldwin's culpability. The reason being, there would be no thought about the gun being a prop gun. Hundreds, or probably thousands of movies over the course of decades were shot on sets in studios without ever considering that these prop guns were real.

The problem with Baldwin's defense, from thousands of miles away and the comfort of my couch, is that this movie was filmed in the remote desert. The story I've heard is, there were people from the set, whether they were the armorer, actors, production crew, friends, family, whoever, that were out shooting real guns nearby. Even if they were a mile away from the actual filming location, the sound of a gunshot, outdoors, not at an indoor range, travels. Those people who were NOT at the actual fun shootout would have heard the gunfire.

If I were an actor whose role it was to handle a gun in this production, you can bet I'd be asking questions about who's been shooting? What guns were they shooting? Were the guns the prop guns and everyone shooting was just practicing with blanks? Are the prop guns capable of shooting live ammunition? If so, is the armorer aware of the live fire? And have they taken the required precautions to verify that ALL live ammunition is accounted for? Who loaded the guns at the practice session? Who handled the live ammo? Did anyone other than the armorer bring any ammo to the range time, or to the set? These are just the basic questions. Then I'd 100% be demanding that the armorer unload every firearm IN MY PRESENCE, and reload it with blanks, WHILE I WATCH.

The fact that there was ANY live ammo on site, and the actors and production crew knew it, BECAISE THEY HEARD IT, and at least should have inquired about it, removes any claims of accidental and innocence for Baldwin.

I live literally 1.1 mile, as the odometer turns and the crow flies, from my clubs indoor range. And approximately 1.25 miles from the outdoor ranges. I do not hear any gunfire from the indoor range. But you can bet your ass I hear any outdoor range firearm activity. I'm sure in the quietness of the remote desert, gunfire would be heard from distances farther away than a mile. So wherever the range time was, they were most probably within earshot of the production site.

I think a period correct handgun would be single action. With the hammer fully cocked, the rigger would be pulled to fire. IF he held the hammer back but not fully back and released the hammer, it would fire. This could be “his loophole” he claims he never pulled the trigger.

This does not exclude him from properly accepting a firearms transfer. It should of been cleared (empty) and action or barrel open for inspection. Then handed to him. Ammo handed to him. He then should of loaded it safely and put in holster with hammer down. (Preferably on one empty cylinder). This proceedure would make it less likely real ammo could be loaded.

My 2 cents is he is responsible for what happened, partially or fully.

The fact that Hollywood does things a certain way is not sufficient to say that's how they *should* do them.

Every actor who handles a gun on set *should* be checking their own gun. If they aren't capable of that, then train them. If they aren't capable of being trained, then either get another actor, or get them a part that doesn't require gun handling.

Some things *should* be simple. Gun safety is one of those things.
