I'm beginning to wonder if the term "prop gun" has different meanings in Hollywood speak. I always assumed a "prop gun" was a fake rubber or plast thing just for background shots. Maybe it means any "gun" functional or not.

The gun —reportedly a vintage Colt pistol— was being used by crew members off set during a "target practice" with real bullets, multiple sources told TMZ.

So....NOT a "prop gun," but rather a real gun used as a prop.

Inexcusable.

Nothing wrong with using a real gun. My understanding is that it's done all the time. Having live ammo anywhere near a set is inexcusable though

This seemed most likely occurrence from the get go. No criminal intent. Just sloppiness and insufficient care of the situation by those responsible for it.

I'm not a LEO or lawyer. That said, it sure sounds like charges of negligent homicide, involuntary manslaughter, or something on those lines seems like a charge that could be appropriate. Again, I know nothing about these charges other than they are for non criminal acts causing a death, I think.

I admittedly know nothing about how hollywood prop guns. I have always been under the assumption that the close up guns were actual firearms firing blanks, sometimes modified. Every now and then on really crappy 80's action flicks one can see a integral barrel blank firing adapter so a AR/M16 would cycle with blanks. On a SA revolver a BFA of course is not necessary.
I completely get how weird accidents happen like the Brandon Lee shooting, but the current reporting is they were using live rounds for some shots, and this had happened twice already? How the fuck would that ever be seen as a good idea? Why would live rounds even be on site for any reason?

Apparently hollywood also calls blanks "live rounds" because they can go bang.

That is certainly not making this situation any clearer.

I can understand why real functional firearms are used. There are a lot of reasons for that. But I can't see why you would ever use *real* live ammunition. Even if you need to show closeups of characters handling it, no powder and a spent primer is plenty easy to come by.



As for the "live ammo" confusion, I guess if you can't get the difference between men and women right, why expect them to get anything else right.

Any gun used in a movie or theater production is a prop gun.

Just like any building is part of the set, whether the built it for the movie, or just rented the place out.


Prop doesn't mean fake.

He was the producer, He was fully aware that his ""stunt double"" had negligent discharges, which means he was also handed a ""safe weapon"" and it went off. if you believe the story they are telling.in other words he should have known to check the weapon

An accident can be negligent or not negligent depending on the circumstances, But it is still an accident if it was unintentional.

The smoking gun that claimed the life of Halyna Hutchins might've been more than just an on-set prop -- it was also being fired recreationally, even when cameras weren't rolling.

Multiple sources directly connected to the 'Rust' production tell TMZ ... the same gun Alec Baldwin accidentally fired -- hitting the DP and director -- was being used by crews members off set as well, for what we're told amounted to target practice.

We're told this off-the-clock shooting -- which was allegedly happening away from the movie lot -- was being done with real bullets ... which is how some who worked on the film believe a live round found its way in one of the chambers that day.

Obviously, authorities would want to speak to anyone who had been using the weapon for target practice, and -- more importantly -- to whoever was putting the gun back among others used for filming.

So it was a real gun being used as a prop, Ok that explains that. It wasn't a prop it was a gun. So they can cut the shit on how a live round ended up being fired from a fake gun. It didn't happen. They are trying so hard to put the blame on the armorer which shares some responsibility, but doesn't alleviate the guilt from Alex ""Bang Bang"" Baldwin. He failed to check the weapon after several incidents had already taken place.(by his stunt double) He failed to take proper safety precautions which resulted in the death of a person.

I dont know if his mental state at the time is relevant but I still believe he did it in anger not horsing around based on his past fits of rage.

Baldwin will have to prove he never had firearms training, never used a firearm recreationally, never been involved in a making a movie which portrayed firearms .

Personal feelings for Baldwin can't play into this. The facts need to tell the story, and it'll be some time before all the facts truly come to light. If personal vendettas and emotion are allowed into the narrative, then the rule of law is dead.

They don't point real guns at eachother in movies. Blanks can kill you. They use angles and movie tricks to make it look that like they are shooting eachother. They also use clear bulletproof panels between actors and the crew, even with blanks , sometimes using remote cameras. After the Lee incident guns are supposed to be check between shots and also test fired into sand buckets before handing them to actors to be Ayre there is no obstruction. If a gun is up against someone's head it's fake and cgi may be used for effects.
This is clearly a series of events disregarding all gun safety and on set rules put in place that ended in a tragedy.
