I just told you that I cannot fit 1200 rounds or even 1000 rounds of the IMI 77gr mk262 clone ammo in a .50 cal can while boxed. I just took 1100 rounds of IMI 55gr m193 packed loose with room to spare in the same type can to a class last week.
I store it both ways. I have alot of it loose and a lot still in the packaging. The 22lr in plastic trays stays that way. I bought a shit ton of the plastic ammo cans

That's easy to keep track of. I'd dump two 500 round cases in a can and label it at 1,000 rounds. If I dump extra in to top it off I'd annotate that on the can.

I store what I'm not going to touch in it's boxes in a can. It comes that way in the can full of boxes so I just leave it that way.
My shooting ammo goes loose in another can. I don't worry about oxygen and moisture absorbers, plastic bags, or any other nonsense. I just grab handfuls with my bare hand when I go to the range. The ammo always goes bang and never rusts.
I think some people overthink things. Ammo doesn't go bad that quickly. Especially if you shoot it.
I'm talking about ammo that I won't be touching but I want on deck ready to go in a hurry.
Yep, that part of my ammo is mostly loose. Again, I can store and carry more per can when it is loose.

Those I load in magazines and have in pouches.
I can feasibly bugout with a few thousand rounds of ammo loose in cans. That much in mags would be too cumbersome. I would keep a second set of cans with loaded mags in it but that only amounts to a couple hundred rounds or so.
The Galil for example I am standardizing on the 25 round Pmags but I only have 10 of those. I think I was able to get 6 of those in a can, plus a 20 rounder. By coincidence I am basing future gear purchases based on a 6 mag loadout. 2 at the ready on the hip, 3 on the chest and one in the gun. Should be ample considering its a small miracle if you get to even the first reload.

I mean on your person a full combat load of about 200 rounds is probably overkill but better safe than sorry. I have that too. I'd probably be dead before I expend it all in anger. But cans upon cans upon cans too?
Depends on the circumstances. In a bug out, link up situation I would want as much as I can carry.
If I owned my own home I'd endeavor to have an entire pallet on standby to play quartermaster with. I don't think I could fit that much into my apt though. Nor would it be feasible to transfer that much over three flights of stairs. But I could grab a few cans worth I think.

Also, 30 x 6 is 180, 25 x 6 is 150.
Whether that much is needed is less relevant than that amount is feasible to carry.

No. It's more like why do you need a to buy a pallet worth of nails at Home Depot to hang 4 pictures on a wall in an apartment. I'm not against any weapon. At a certain point it becomes ridiculous unless you plan on becoming a nail distributor.
You may only have need of 4 pictures worth of nails right now but what if you wanted to be prepared for the event that you leave home to work with a team of carpenters to build a house?
It would be nice to have a lot of nails.

The Army’s basic load for the M4 is 210 rounds carried in seven 30 round mags. That is the “proper balance” of weight and ammo needed to conduct a patrol and engage in contact with the enemy. This is about right for a patrol with adequate backup supply lines.
If you are alone and don’t have a logistical support system it is no where near adequate to engage with an enemy. Of course if you are hold up in a location the more you have the better. If you are humping it alone lighter is better and avoidance is key to survival.
I always figured 2000 rounds per gun is an adequate supply. Figure that is probably more than most people will shoot in their lifetime. It is also a good month of practice for others. So everything is a balance of what will you realistically shoot in your lifetime and what is practical.
There are guns I have 200 rounds for and others I have 5000 rounds. I rarely ever shoot shotguns or my 35 Remington so there is no sense in having more than a couple of hundred rounds for those. Rimfire cannot be reloaded (practically) so having a couple of thousand of those on hand is very practical and easily achieved.
Military guys tend to have more than they need because of the theory,”two is one and one is none”combined with Murphy’s law of anything that can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time.
Balance is the key.
