I have bunches of ammo I was going to shoot, but never got around to it, because other pursuits took priority. It just sits there for over 2 decades. As years go by, you accumulate more stuff, it's hard to keep it in your head what you have. Not just ammo, also mags and other gear. It's nice to see the ammo you forgot all about in its original boxes with data like bullet weights, manufacturer and so on. The older you get, the more you appreciate labeling and making notes.
BTW, people collect older ammo in its original packaging. It is also easier to sell or gift it to someone. Just my 2 cents.

By yourself or with your family in tow, you can't afford a sustained firefight. You have to avoid all contact if possible and if you can't, you have to engage and retreat. All that extra weight of more than 200 rds may prevent you in doing so. Chances are that if you expend one 30 Rd magazine or 3 10 Rd magazines in many of our cases, you are an outnumbered dead man.

I used to carry 200 (20 Mag's) rounds in bandoleers and another 200 (20Mag's) in my ruck, stuffed into sox to keep them from rattling around. We were usually in the middle of nowhere and resupply was sometimes questionable, especially in bad weather.

The M-16. My first issued one was the old style without the plated chamber, super light bolt, it could rip off a full mag before you remember to let up on the trigger, but it was prone to jamb and every time there was a halt in movement I was checking to make sure everything was clean and free. Round about Christmas the battalion armorer came out in the field looking for that version and I was issued a brand spanking new one, Heavy bolt chrome chamber and forward assist, it was a much nicer gun, though my habits were firmly in place and I still checked it over every chance I had. It didn't fire off a mag as fast, sort of a rapid chug in comparison, but I liked it all right. I never did completely warm up the the platform til about twenty years ago. My kids convinced me they got 'all' the bugs out.

100%. This is a perfect example of when it is better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it.

And here is an example when it's too much. A few years ago I decided to go on a hike in Harriman State Park with my bugout bag. I only made it a quarter of the way of the route I normally take before I turned right back. This was with my pack not counting my carbine and ammo.

When I got back home, I dumped the whole pack and shitcanned all unnecessary stuff. I replaced some items with others that now served dual purposes. All luxury items were gone. I had to try to make weight for the ammo and carbine.

It's one thing to put everything on at home in front of a mirror and perhaps on a little walk down the road and another humping up hills in wilderness on mile number 3.

People don't realize how much things really weigh after fatigue starts setting in. I'm not a big dude but I'm in fairly descent shape in my early 40's. Now add movement in haste and it weighs even more. Add grey hair and gut like most here and it'll weigh even more.

I couldn't imagine carrying over 200 rds and being combat effective. Your bag should contain more food and water than ammo.

I have no clear recollection Freddie. I do remember with the older model I loaded eighteen rounds per mag, twenty could cause problems, not always, but there is no second chance. The new model I loaded twenty and no problem, that I recall.

You won't always have the luxury of cover for a reload, in fact you will proly won't.
If you are jamming on the FA and if the action isn't fully closing for a reason, such as a fouled chamber, you will have made the problem worse.

You know, as soon as I read this, I remembered when I first got my AR, and smacked that thing on every reload, Yes muscle memory, HAH! I still do sometimes unconsciously, and am reminded of it when shooting with one of the kids. Thanks!

Don't feel bad I Still do it myself. Every battle rifle the US adopted (save the origional M16) has had since the self contained cartridge was invented had a way to force the bolt closed.

But even the m16 had a dish in the bolt so you could close it with your finger. Go figure! Wonder if the engineer that dreamed up that one ever stuck his index finger on a smoking hot bolt carrier?

I know well what you are talking about. It is a part of mental game used in archery, shooting sports and other pursuits. "Subconscious" is the correct word for what you describe. "Unconscious" is a medical condition.
