The 158 grain wad cutters punch nice holes. They should be adequate as-is.
I've heard of people loading them backwards to make a kind of hobo hollow point, but I can't see that working well.

Honestly, the biggest difference between these and an unaltered bullet was how they expanded. The energy between the bullets would be exactly the same, hence the damage would be the same. Note the difference in expansion at 09:38.

I guess my question is, is there a problem if I go over 90 grains of Winchester 231? (5.8 grams) I'm not trying to get into the Reloads in your carry gun are a bad idea legally. It will certainly be used against you in court questions, but in a SHTF situation, I can barter.
I would say that yes, using more than 90 grains of w231 would not be advisable.

Lee gives a max charge of 4.5 grains of Win 231 under a 158 grain lead bullet with a minimum overall length of 1.550".
Lyman gives a max load of 4.0 grains of Win 231 under the same bullet with a minimum OAL of 1.445"
90 grains of 231 (or even 5.8 grains) is likely to give you a hand grenade.
The recipes above are for conventional bullets, not wadcutters. Wadcutters would have a reduced load due to the smaller combustion / expansion area in the case with the more deeply seated bullet.

Way back in the day Elmer Keith ran hot 158gr wadcutters for a defensive load. It wouldn't be as good as a hollowpoint but better than round nose FMJs. Frankly with the supply issues we are having, do what you gotta.

I've read several times from various sources that Jim Cirillo from the NYPD Stakeout Squad preferred full wadcutters for their more lethal effect. Having talked to a couple older NYPD detectives, they confirmed that they preferred to carry the full wadcutters in their .38 snubbies over the round-nose stuff. Neither ever had to put them to the test.
No idea about 158 grain wadcutters or .357 brass, but here's data for 148 grainers in .38 brass.
One manual gives me a [3.5 GRAIN START LOAD] of Winchester 231, and a [4.0 GRAIN MAX LOAD] with a velocity range of 869-956 fps. Those velocities seem pretty ambitious given that Hodgdon uses a 7.7" test barrel, which I'm guessing is unvented.
With IMR Trail Boss powder, it lists a [2.0 grain START LOAD] to a [2.3 grain MAX LOAD] with a velocity range of 625-675 fps. Again, I'd expect real velocities to be lower.
I just got dies and about 1000 count 148 gr wadcutters for my .38, so I'm really hoping either of those starting loads are accurate because they'd make for some really economical shooting. I'll probably work up a couple batches with these powders, run them by the chronograph, and post the results. Results will be with a 1-7/8" barreled snubbie.

Its still an accurate load. You just have to work harder for it.
Yea its awesome in the k38, those other 38s will never rival it. So i will use the ammo to practice with the bullseye machine
