AR build parts recommendations?

Not to be snarky, but there is no law or part of the safe act nor CCIA BS that says you have to put epoxy in the Allen hole. It's just based on your comfort level.

To me a mag lock is a mag lock. It's fulfilling the task of affixing a magazine to my rifle. Adding epoxy doesn't do anything additional. That doesnt make it more permanent because it can still be removed. The only way to fulfill the definition of a permenantly attached magazine would be to get an aluminum mag and literally weld it into the magazine well.


No DA is going to dare open up the can of worms to prosecute a rifle that has a mag lock and 10 round mag they do not want any part of touching that electric fence because it would likely lead to the end of the safe act for being completely absurd.

I second that. I don't have any fixed mag builds, but I know people who use these and think they make a helluva lot more sense than epoxying shit in place:

I agree. I do it just for extra measure and it’s simple to remove. I have extra mags around so I’m hopefully getting around the law that says the part you have make it illegal as a whole although I have a featureless one so I can just swap parts there. Who knows and many of them come with epoxy so I just do it.

I will see what options I have at the gun shop when I pick up my lower, and either buy it there or order one of the options above. I’m kind of digging the NY Trigger Guards button. Simple, cheap. Why would I want to spend more money than I have to in order to render my rifle less usable?

Anyone use the Bear Flag reloader with good results? I saw one at my favorite shop last weekend and it started this whole process. Looks slick.

I’m going to need more ammo after I get this new rig clicking. I have a couple kinds of .223 and one brand of 5.56 to run and see how they work out. What should I be looking at for brands and best price these days? Nearest shops are getting about 62 cents per round. Thanks to everyone for all the help in this thread.

My rifles shoot anything except steel cased shit. That price locally seems to be about reasonable and right for the time. If you want to have it shipped and you have an FFL target sport usa can save you a bunch of money. I like Rogers sporting goods since they have free shipping on over $99 so if you wanted to try a few boxes of a few different brands that’s a good way to do it.
As for what ammo you end up with see what your rifle shoots the best. I’m fine with anything reasonably around the bullseye so I buy what’s available and cheap. If your look for 0.5” groups then that’s a different story. My .223/.556 is for my homestead protection so if I hit a human I’m GTG.

I think a this would make a great foundation for an A-10 Warthog themed build. Flat gray, a few panel lines, a couple appropriately designated decals, like “Danger - Intake” near the mag well, “Remove Before Flight” “No Step” Etc.

Anyway, I am going fixed mag, my question is - what features are allowed/how many? Is there anything that is not allowed regardless of version build? As of now, I have pistol grip, adjustable stock, and birdcage flash hider... Ordered a Maglock set up for the fixed mag, and getting rid of the compmag - Thanks in advance, and again, sorry for hijacking this thread!

The NY definition by law of an "Assault Weapon" has to have a detachable magazine. If your build is a fixed mag, you can have as many evil features as your wallet can provide, and you're legal in NY.

Thanks alot! Yeah, that was my take on it as well, but wasn't 100% sure - and when I tried getting a straight answer, it just didn't happen...but thankfully thru many many searches, this forum popped up,and here I am! Wish I found this forum a long time ago....

Haha! Definitely not a troll or spy! Will be here for good - hopefully with good insight,and i like having ALL the knowledge I can possibly cram into this skull as possible... Laws are changing constantly,and its finally nice to have a place where I can keep up with all of the bullshit. Been shooting shotguns and rifles since I was 12, and always wanted to get into building,I know from friends and family that ARs are super customizable and fairly easy to build, and let me say, from the first detent installed, Im addicted! Thanks for the welcome, already feel the friendly atmosphere here!

Fixed 10rd is what I'm running. I originally went with the compmag fixed 10rd,looks like a 30rd,but heard that they're not that great, so ordered a few pmag 10rd mags, and an ARMaglock for the locking mech.

Other than aesthetics it offers no value and only drawbacks. You open the door for probable cause for a LEO to give your gun a closer look. Nothing good can come out of it, and if you ever decide to lay prone the 10 round mag is nice and tight it will not be in the way. No sense to have the length of a 30 if you can't enjoy the benefits of it.

Yeah, exactly. I like the look, but not enough to possibly drawing attention to myself for no reason - even if I am compliant - just don't need it!

One feature in NYS makes it an assault rifle. If you want any features you need to have a fixed mag. It’s all detailed right here.
