The 10/30s are nice if you remain detachable just for the dexterity in handling them and storing them on your kit. But doing it fixed, definitely better off with a 10.

Yeah, I'm sticking with the 10rd fixed on this one. Might go a different route on my next build, not sure yet... And gotta let the wife cool down a bit about the money I'm spending before I start another haha!

1. For me, the whole point of building an AR was having cool features. It’s not hard to pull a pin and load the fixed mag. (Not a HD rig, so fast mag swaps are not an issue with this gun. Also, see Bear Flag BF10 loader for a pretty solid option at fast reloads for fixed mags.)
2. NYTriggerGuards mag lock. Sooooo easy, priced right. Vendor is a member here, so it was the only choices for me.

Totally agree about the cool features and customizability. What is an HD rig and did you have to put a plug into the mag lock to can I use one of them styrofoam ear plugs in there? Thinking supporting like minded people like NYTriggerGuard is a good move that I'm gonna get behind.

HD is Home Defense. You'll want to have the detachable mag if thats the purpose of the build. Top loading is not practical in a combat scenario.
Theres nothing in there that says the magazine has to be permanently attached. The word "permanent" does it appear in the text anywhere. Years ago a NYSP spokesman gave an opinion and used the word permanent. Some folks feel more comfortable trying to show legality by filling the matlock set screws with an epoxy, its a personal choice.

Awesome thanks, I don’t plan on using it for HD. To me locked is locked, saw someone in the thread say only way to really make it permanent would be to weld it and screw that. I'll drop a pic here once I get it all built

They're surprisingly easy to build, and fun as hell! Just need some patience, and plan on dropping the tiny detents and springs a few times... Lol. Armorers wrench, upper/lower receiver vice blocks, roll pin punch set 1/16" and up, and you're good to go!
Be warned tho, the addiction is worse than when you get your first tattoo! Have fun with it brother!

That’s an 8” wide target at 50 yds from the first day I fired my new rifle. I thought it was freakin awesome, and pretty accurate and precise for a first run. I’ll get better the more I run it. So I started cruising around the we , looking for stuff, like an ambi selector switch (I shoot left handed) and I found things. Cool things. Expensive things. Then I find the Reddit AR15 sub and found out that my rifle sucks because Aero Precision is junk, and people will spend $400 on a light for their ARs, $300+ on triggers, and $40 each on rail covers. One thing I never saw in those big money posts, not once, were pics of results down range. I sure love my cheap, povert level build. A lot!

Hell yeah brother! That's a hell of group for first run! Fuck those haters on reddit - most likely don't own an AR, let alone shoot one... They repeat what they watch on YouTube... A CNC machined lower is a lower... Only difference really is the logo stamped in it. I built my 1st about 2 months ago, a 400 dollar CBC industries upper build kit, and a 69 dollar Anderson stripped lower... Under $500, and by far my favorite gun. I don't have my 1st targets, sadly, but my grouping was similar to your for 1st run. Hoping to get to range this weekend, and will update with pics of what my shitty 469$ rifle can do... Haha

So far, I like 55gr for .223 and 62gr for 5.56 I’m sure I’ll learn to love other weights, but I’m content for now.

Awesome - thanks for the info, much appreciated! Yeah, I 've only tried the Federal 55grain 5.56 FMJ so far... it was the cheapest they had at my guy, so bought 6- 100 rd boxes, $70/box. No complaints really - low recoil, no misfires... I dig em.

That's awesome. You are well within "practical application" for minute of man accuracy. You are just fine.
Secondly, people turn into AR snobs. Just tune it out. They talk about their $3000 builds like the way soccer moms compare shoes and purses. Its just this toxic social media cult (ure) to constantly compete, one up someone, brag, get like a, get thumbs up etc... It becomes a toxic cesspool.
Just ignore it. You have an entirely capable setup. That's what matters. You're time and money are better served rocking the crap out of a mil-spec poverty pony and training then in spending 3k on a Gucci gun that just sits in a closet and larps on Instagram.
The 700$ builds now are more capable and ergonomic than military issued m16s and m4s from the 90s for crying out loud. Don't worry you're doing just fine.
And someday everything that was old will be new again.
Some day, carry handles will be cool again.
Just do things that work for you and that you like.

I’m searching for a functional but cool ambi (or right side only) selector switch. (I shoot everything left handed. I can shoot right, handguns and rifles, but left just feels better. Left eye dominant, also.) A regular selector is a bit awkward to operate left handed, not a deal breaker, but if I could find something that gives my left thumb the duty of flipping up/down, I’d be happy. Or a shorty left-side lever and regular length right-side, so that the lever isn’t hitting my trigger finger in the firing position. Tons of options out there, from basic to extra saucy, and prices from $24 - $ridiculous. I’ll find one once I decide I “need” it. I don’t want it to be too cool looking, all CNC’d and JimmySpaceMan hyper cool, but I don’t want that typical mil-spec retro 60s looking art-deco selector if I’m gonna spend more than $30 on it. I might be turning into an AR snob!
