AR Platform, Something Else Or Nothing?

A rifle is the "long arm" that you don't seem to have.
For something that is of non-specific purpose but convenient to have one must look into certain simple characteristics:
-Reliable & versatile.
-Popular Ammo
-Popular magazines
-Popular mechanism and with that continuity of parts over the years. Avoid proprietary systems / obscure brands that might
not might not be around in a few years time.
Lots of those things are included in bolt action but if defense is a primary concern then one should look into an autoloader.
Several handy sporting rifles/ranch type carbines come to mind.

I would see if you can find at least 5 glock 17 or 19 magazines for it first. A home defense gun with one mag is planning to fail.

Doc, the AR is America's gun. It should be a required element in the stable of anyone who claims to be a 2A supporter. Just do it. You won't regret it. The Brinks truck doesn't follow the hearse.

If you can align a spine you can build a lower. They're easy. Put your son to use to help, make that AU engineering degree pay you back a little. Lol.

They do make Ruger mags but glock mags are more common.

@Dr. Evil if you are even slightly interested in the ruger PCC, may I suggest looking at an Fightlite SCR.. yes its a neutered AR but its not an ugly or butchered design (well it is but its actually nicely executed, as much as it can be)

At that point the only thing you'd be missing is a muzzle device..

But you'd have other options such as a any upper you want (with obvious limitations). Hell you can even do simple caliber changes and you get to keep detachable magazines

659 + shipping + transfer fee + upper + Doc is not really a gun guy = better off buying a gun with a warranty.

Doc, As you said about these uncertain times! For you or anyone else I would ask (no need to reply) what is your ammo situation? If your pistols are 9mm do you have a good size stash? If so the PC9 would be a good choice, better if you have a 40 S&W as there is still 40 S&W ammo around and Ruger makes a PC 40 S&W.

As for a AR or Mini 14 and a SCR (I have two of the three.) There really isn't much 5.56/223 ammo around your a little late to the party.

Shotgun ammo is in better supply even if it is just birdshot!

His younger brother who is an aerospace engineering major at Buffalo Univ. actually built his own AR when he was 11 lol. My older guy is very well versed himself. They can teach their old man a thing or two.

Did I say things wrong? I meant that a shotgun with buckshot would have less of a chance of causing collateral damage accidentally to someone else like a family member in another room or a neighboring house that is pretty close by. Is this logic not correct? Edumacate me if not.

Definitely less over-penetration with 9mm.

A correct self defense 5.56 load will actually penetrate things like walls less than something like buckshot or a slug.

Everything you want for a self defense load will most likely go through a wall, but something like 5.56 will have less energy than buck shot (and I believe less than 9mm) after going through a wall

Launched the buffer retaining pin last night. Didn’t find the spring until this morning. Good thing for hardwood floors.

I now do all my work involving tiny springs inside of a clear plastic bag.

I use the bag like a glove box.

It's slightly more cumbersome to work that way, but the first unintended launch and it's easily worth it.

I keep an empty 1 gallon zip lock and a 15 gallon garbage bag in my "gunsmithing kit" now.

A handgun gives relative comfort. A rifle gives real comfort. That is why when the product really hits the fan fighters fight with rifles and not handguns. Hand guns are relegated to backup/last resort.
