Marine Cpl
.577 Tyrannosaur.
If an SBR at close ranges going at over 2000 FPS is not effective than a full 20 inch rifle at 200 yards after slowing down to over 2000 FPS is not effective.
No. Read again. Are you telling us that a 50 gr to 55 gr going at about 2500 to 2700 FPS is not effective in a body at CQB distances?
No. Read again.
I think everyone is in agreement that military ammo is a no go in an sbr, other than plinking and saving money. I myself will be stocking up on fusion msr 62.Like I said:
When I say terminal performance we are talking about 22 to 2300 fps at impact and anything slower than that in any caliber that is 30 caliber or smaller is going to also impact the wounding potential that is a huge hindrance for the caliber. Can still kill? you bet, but the point is you are going to be pretty shorthanded.
How shorthanded? well, it depends on how short one goes with the barrel and what is acceptable for one's given use and circumstances and ammo used. Like the M855, with the loss speed the neck in a wound cavity lengthens past to 6 even 8 inches before it does something so the best of what the bullet has to offer is gone after 100 yards shot from a 16.5" barrel. This will increase pin hole wounding potential like it happens with the stout AK rounds. That is why I suggest the BH 77gr or other OTM for shorter barrels and given that one doesn't care much about body armor or other hard barrier penetration.
Also the chart you posted, did you measure those loads yourself? If so check your chrono. They do not look all accurate. They are a bit all over the place. For example PMC bronce is around 250 to 300 fps slower than the federal (LC plant) equivalent so it will struggle to make those speeds in shorter barrels. Also the IMI 62gr in a 10.5" barrel is most likely to produce something in the 2400-2450 range with 10" barrel in a gas gun but those might be bolt action measures. Not sure. I have tested those and many others and compared with other in this forum (most gone now) so we have first hand data on many of those.
Once again, if one must go shorter than 16" or even 14 to 15" then at least be very careful about ammo and bullet selection because the military surplus or service round and their lower pressure counterparts might not help compensate or might even contribute to the problem.
In all honesty I am not interested in youtuber "expert" reports or long online discussions that have been beaten to a pulp in the past. Everyone should be wise to do their research and testing of all components and equipment and come to their own conclusions.

Fusion is fairly cheap and plentiful, expands down to 1800 fps. Covers my needs.I really like the 75-77 grain stuff I'd like to stock up on incase there is ever a large luau

It's pretty well known that fusion is using gold dot bullets. So I'm seeing it fir 17-21 dollhairs a box which that's not bad at all.
I'm probably look into gold dots
But I may or may not have just found 1,000 of lake city SS109 (this is what I was thinking of early with the hopping up the speed to help with the shorter barrels) for 290 dollhairs

As with anything, the right ammo is necessary. Just like you wouldn’t use a ball round for a deer, you wouldn’t use a low velocity ball round that relies on fragmentation for home defense in a short barrel. A hollow point that goes over 2500 FPS is in order.

The weight restrictions only apply to a semi auto with detachable mag.besides all the cal war going on lol .. isn't there a law on the weight of it too we could be discussing too ??
Normally I always say you're better off building, but in this case, sometimes it's just easier to add to permit (depending on county and ffl) if you can find one ready to go for the right price.thanks for the input, this is going to be a range toy so i'm set on the 5.56. I have plenty of pistols that shoot pistol calibers already and are better suited for home defense. I've had 2 different single shot pistols in the past both had 10" barrels chambered in 7mm-08. they were a blast to shoot at the range. ring steel at 175 yards easy with both of them. so the .556 should be pretty mild.
10.5 barrel is what I looking at just have to decide on the rest.

Bringing up a stripped lower with the county is likely going to cause confusion and problems. I would also look at the ones bullet guy is selling, then get a 10.5 barrel and swap it out with the 7".I am kind of going back and forth on biulding one vs buying a factory one. one dealer need me has a ruger but it's way over priced. I am going to talk to another dealer about getting a lower put on my permit not sure how my county is about stripped lowers

I built mine on a stripped lower. Depends on your county. Orange county said no problem. List it on the amendment form as frame only. I then had to send a receipt for the barrel showing length and caliber.
I purpose built mine for hunting so a fixed 5 round mag.
12" 6.5 Grendel. 200 yard zero. MPBR with Fusion MSR around 250.
